This past Monday the O-School’s Group D elementary students, thought about wishes. The holidays season can feel magical. Wishes can be dreams for things that you truly want: a pet kitten, toys, money, or traveling to faraway places. We discussed different ways people try to make their wishes come true, either by wishing on a shooting star, a fallen eyelash, pulling wishbones, blowing out birthday candles, or throwing a coin in a fountain.
Together we read the poem, “I Wish,” by Santhini Govindan. Govindan wishes are silly and fantastical. I wish that spinach tasted like chocolate, instead of tasting sour and bitter. /I wish I could keep a dragon as a pet at home, so I can play with him to my hearts delight. Even if some wishes seem like they may never happen, Govindan’s poem teaches us that wishes can be made possible through belief.
Inspired by Santhini Govindan, students created their own wishes. Make a make a wish reader, if you believe with all your heart, it might come true.
