Sometimes it is hard to choose just one thing we are thankful for. This week the 7th graders of Clinton celebrated gratitude by writing odes for what makes them most thankful. After reading “Ode to Thanks” by Pablo Neruda, students reflected not only on who and what they are thankful for but why and how it makes them feel. Students celebrated family members, friends, pets, music, food, sleep, nature, and much more, using beautiful and heartfelt descriptions to highlight their thanks.

“The Art of ‘Le Pencil”
by IB R.
Oh pencil, fine pencil, the feel
of your smooth orange wood
is as soothing as ever.
Oh pencil, fine pencil, the
sharpness of thine led stabs
through my heart.
Oh pencil, fine pencil, your
rubbery eraser slicing away
at my mistakes.
Oh pencil, fine pencil, slick
physique brings me to tears.
Oh pencil, short pencil, sharpened
’till no longer useful, I shall
find a fine pencil in replacement
of you.

“Thankful For”
by Gay P.
The sun shines bright, I flick my eyes to open, I rush in the

I shivered as I held the cup in my hand, the smoke escaped
flowing above my dessert it was a cold scent.

“The Blessing of Flowers”
by Zaidah A.
I’m thankful for flowers because they make
me feel like I’m loved and appreciated
It brings me joy seeing the flowers dance
in the sunlight
It’s my comfort place and I love receiving flowers
The smell of the pollen makes me want to sneeze
But I’m thankful for the ability to smell the
fragrance of flowers
The sweet taste of flowers
The soft touch of the petals
Brings me the warmth and joy of life
And I’m expressing my gratitude here today

“Best Sisters”
by Aatika B.
Every time we hang out
Our bond grows closer
Every time I pest her
The more our smiles curve
Getting older
I’m getting lonelier
My days getting darker
She’s always there
My friend, sister and mentor
But she does much more
My diary, she always knows
My therapist, she always listens
In school, I’m just a tool
and nothing more
I come back home
I see her, I smile
She’s going to college soon
I won’t see her in awhile
Thank you my sister.
“Thanks to Soccer”
by Ibrahim A.
I am thankful for soccer because it’s a fun
way to exercise
The ball at my feet
my jersey glistening with the number 7
The fans cheering me on
The bright stadium lights
The excitement of the World Cup
The suspense of a tied game
Passing the ball with my team
I check the inside of my locker
and it’s filled with photos of soccer

“Thanks to Stars”
by Armesha S.
Thanks to stars
the same stars that shine down
every night,
I stand and feel the breeze
but not enough to freeze.
I am blessed to see stars.
Beautiful stars.
The smell of my perfume is heavy.
Stars, they shine down
just because of stars,
I’d leave town.
Thanks to stars,
I feel less lonely.
They are far
but I don’t care.
Stars…
“God”
by Sophia J.
Thanks to God, thanks to water, air, food, and
love. I am thankful for God. Without God we
would be nothing. I feel protected and happy
with God when I pray.
“My Ode to Takis”
by Annabelle K.
Thanks to Takis
it’s so good
it’s so delicious
it’s so flavorful
it makes me feel happy
The Takis powder on my fingers,
the pigment of Red,
the voice of people asking
for some Takis
it makes me feel happy,
it makes me feel good,
it makes me feel amazing.
The Takis dust with all the flavor
the bright color
the sound of the crunches
it’s the best chips I’ve had,
it’s my go to chips,
it’s my number one favorite.
The Takis smell
the bag crinkling
the sound of the Takis bag
crumbling.
The sight of the empty Takis
bag the sound of it being
crumbled up and thrown away.
