This is the question that Twain 3rd graders were asked to think about during the final session of our generative residency. This was also Holiday Spirit Week at Twain and many students showed-off their holiday socks! We had a wonderful time enacting our poetry cafes, in which students “took to the stage” to share readings of their poems. I also asked students to write a few lines about what poetry means for them; from which I created some composites that you can read, here. I’m going to miss you, but thank you so much for a wonderful residency. Happy holidays to all!

Poetry is a tree that smells good
Poetry is boring because it is like watching paint
dry. You just sit there and
write until you can’t anymore.
Poetry makes me feel tired
Poetry makes me feel happy.
Poetry is a bully with yellow hands
tall and proud. When you do
poetry it leaves madness
to dust. Poetry is full of
joy.
Poetry is as cool as swings.
My favorite part of poetry is
when we have time to write
it smells likes angels from the
sky and makes me proud.
Poetry makes me feel dreamy
and calm. It tastes like
strawberries and cheesecake
Poetry is wild because you have
a lot of things to think about.
Poetry is about writing and
imagination. It smells like coffee in
the mornings. Poetry makes
me happy. If poetry was a color it would
be peach and brown and
if poetry was a creature it would write everyday.
Poetry is colorful. It makes you
feel good. poetry is like a song
poetry is fun, it is cool. If
you do poetry oooo baby you
will feel good.
Poetry is interesting
because you can
use your imagination
and using your imagination
is being creative
Poetry is interesting
because it could be your feelings
Poetry is amazing
poetry is fun because we
learn fun things
poetry makes me feel so happy
and amazing. it is fun because we
read books. poetry is the color blue because
blue is pretty.
Poetry smells like paper
It is as big as Earth
It feels like squish mellows
If poetry was a creature
it will be popular at school
It will have a pencil in her ear all the time
Poetry is the size of a third grader.
everybody will want to be poetry’s friend.
Poetry is like a portal walking
into imagination. Poetry is a
calm place. Poetry is an
imaginary friend. It
feels like a fuzzy penguin.
Writing a poem is
the best subject on
Tuesdays.

If poetry was an animal
it would be a black cat that knows
how to write basic words but
she is still learning some more. She is
small. She loves hot chocolate with whipped
cream and marshmallows.
My poetry creature would be
furry with long hair
her skin color would be pink. She
would not like talking in big
crowds. She would be shy.
Poetry can be hard as a jaw breaker.
Poetry is calm
Poetry is fun, like writing poems and listening
to everyone else’s poem.
If poetry was
a student it would
be the top of the
class. it would be beautiful
as a flower blooming.
I think that poetry is fun and
it’s really cool. I would want to
do this again.
If poetry was a creature
she would be a light blue cloud
and always wear a blue backpack.
She would keep extra paper and
pencils to write poems with.
If one of her friends wanted to
write poems
she would, too!
I think poetry is a cute dog that looks
like a plum.
Poetry is like a dream if it
came true. It is a gift to me.
Poetry is hard because
you have to write a lot
and think what you’re going
to write
like now.
I wish we can
have like 6 hours.
Poetry is mostly blue
and it has blue scales.
Poetry is fun, peaceful
it helps me learn to
focus on my work
and my mistakes.
It feels like I am in
my own world.
Poetry to me is an ordinary
creature with greens eyes. It
encourages you to express
your feelings and thoughts.
It says it’s okay, just
make a poem of it. if you
don’t know how to make
a poem it will help you
like Ms. Leslie. It hangs out with you and helps you
publish your thoughts to
the world. It smells like
cupcakes. It’s yellow and
looks like a snail with puppy eyes.
Poetry is so hard
and it is like butterfly.
If poetry was an animal it would be
a peaceful parrot in a golden shiny cage. the
color of the parrot would be rainbow with
a white belly. It would have bright blue
eyes with big beautiful wings. It wants
to break free from the cage. If
poetry was an emotion it would be peace.
