Turn On A Rhyme

Week two at Lawndale was all about rhyme. After a classic game of Concentration 64, students used their rhyming skills to write poems about their city, the good and the bad, the happy and the sad. They considered the sights, sounds, and smells of Chicago, exploring everything from music to street violence. This is their city on a rhyme.

Chicago, Chicago

by Ji’mia W.

My Chicago I hate when you make loud sounds.

I hate when you make parents cry because they miss

their child who hides somewhere deep in the crowds.

I hate when you make me cry. I hate when you

make me mad even worse when you make me sad.

Because deep down I fear you because of the way

you sound because of the way you make people

cry and the way you put people 6ft under

ground.

Chicago Chicago

by Jiyah M.

The smells I fear are the nasty gas when the cars pass.

The sound I hate is the noisy sirens flashing

red and blue. I don’t know what to do. Chicago

Chicago the place I despise is the gross

old ally. Chicago Chicago the thing I love

is the smell of the flowers blooming in

the summer. The sound that shines on me

is the music in the streets. The place

I love is my daring home. Chicago Chicago

if I ever moved I would miss you because of

your tunes.

The Land of Chicago

by Demarkus J.

Kanye West one of the best to come out

the land of Chicago where everything

can turn into a violent matter where some

kids’ lives don’t matter holding out for

some justice and peace in the streets

where kids can’t even dream we need

a different soul

City, City

by Jada M.

Oh how bad you smell,

the smell of wet grass

makes my insides go ew

but the smell of food gets

me in a better mood.

Hearing gunshots makes

me worry but hearing

the bell smooths my story.
