There May Be a Reason Why

This week, the world lost the poetry giant and phenom that is Nikki Giovanni. Fittingly, last week’s 7th graders explored bravado and bragadoccio in her iconic poem “Ego Trippin (there may be a reason why).” We grounded the poem in the historical happenings of the time – namely, the “Black Is Beautiful” movement – before diving into the poem. Then students wrote their own poems of self-praise; take a look below:

I’m so cool, I’m like ice
but ice melts at some point
to a puddle of warm water.
I’m so calm, I’m just a chill guy.
but there is also crashout guy.
I’m so silly, I’m like Theda.
but she gets mad whenever she loses block blast.
I’m so perfect, I’m like a pink drink.
but when the ice melts it gets watered down.
Every thing is a little imperfect.
but not Simon.

On the Eiffel Tower
I am so perfect, I am a star
Falling from the sky
I’m so cool, I’m the weather
on a cold winter day
where warmth is away
I’m so calm, I’m a leaf
On a river
down the stream
a leaf

I am ninja.
I was born in weather rizzy as Kai Cenat.
There was then a meme as massive as a mountain
I was astounded, but my fortnite was calling,
and I had to prepare for knee surgery tomorrow.
My knee surgery was canceled
And in my reign of power I got a low taper fade
Then crashed out because the
meme was still massive
