For our 3rd session with Waters 6th graders, we dove into the wonderful world of metaphors. They’re all around us, like in the Katy Perry song “Firework” (which we listened to and watched the video for). After discussing examples in the video, we turned to two short poems: “Dreams” by Langston Hughes and “Frost” by Valerie Bloom. Students talked about which they liked more – evenly split, roughly – and wrote their own metaphor-laden poems. Take a look below and enjoy!

The world is melting
by Abby K.
The world is an ice cream cone, slowly going away
My home is home, where family lives
My heart is a cash register, filled with money
6th grade is a rollercoaster, crazy and dizzying
My grandma is candy, sweet
My paper is filled like my brother’s piggybank
My mind is filled like my paper
And the world is still melting
Not Knowing the Effect
by Ewan A.
The world is a broken ceramic pot.
It can be fixed but will never be the same.
We ruin our world without knowing the effect.
Our land, hard as a rock.
Cold and broken.
We try to help but can’t because of other people.
This paper is an example of deforestation.
We ruin habitats for our benefit.
Remember what you are doing when you get…
a new piece of paper.
Life
by William N.
The world is melting falling apart
My home is cozy I’m immortal
My heart is squishy protected by a mental and physical cage
6th grade is hard trapped in a prison
My parents are amazing my guardians
My paper is full bubbling with ideas
My mind is ready buzzing at my fingertips
Cemetary
by Lillian L.
There is a cemetary
2 hours away
there their bodies lay
but in my heart
their spirits play
My heart is a playground
For my people I love
Who lay in the cemetary
2 hours away
So their spirits can play

Metaphors
by Melanie M.J.
The world is a home run
My home is a big fluffy blanket over me
My heart is a flower blooming
6th grade is full of obstacles
My mom is a best friend to me
My journal is my thoughts of the outside world
My mind is a bird flying around the world
Metaphors
by Aydin C.
My heart is a red dress
to impress a test
6th grade is a chemistry class
when studying, you never touch grass
Metaphors
by Alvaro L.
My life is an advanced algebra problem.
The world is a loud noise.
My home is a storm.
But my mind is loud, happy, unexpected.
The opposite of blank, it’s me
Metaphors
by Matthew G.
The world is one big Amazon meeting
You walk in and its absent of greeting
In this room, there cannot be eating
But a delightful choice of seating
The world is not always kind
But in this mess you must find
A piece of paper that is lined
And a major to grind
When you eventually die,
Down here, we hope you fly high
