Oh, nostalgia. It’s a powerful feeling, and one that 6th graders at Waters explored with the Aimee Nezhukumatathil poem “When I Was 6”. Before we read the poem, I asked students to think back to their favorite or most memorable age. What made it so memorable, what made it so good? Students wrote about a wide range of ages; I hope you enjoy reading their reflections on age as much as I did!

Four

When I was 8 I played football
I played on a team and in my basement
When I was 5 I drove to see the bulls
I love them, still
I am 11, in middle school
When I Was 6
by Anthony L.
When i was 6 I could imagine
anything it was cool seeing action
figures fight and play mortal kombat
with my brother, making a bed with
my 2 couches together and blankets
stapled to the wall back when
I didn’t have to do anything
and just be me
When i was 7

When I was young
by Wally S.
I remember the clock ticking
the seconds till I go outside,
the seconds of a test
the time left in the game of chess
the clock ticked when I practiced vocals
the clock was always there.
When I Am Ten
by William S.
When I was ten years old
I loved to play video games
from pixelated monsters to riches untold
and characters with funny names
When I was ten years old
I loved to read books
from stories about explorers and gold
to superheroes with good looks
When I was ten years old
I didn’t like to go to school
from the food covered in mold
to parts where I snored and drooled
When I was ten years old
I had lots of fun
but now it’s getting cold
so this poem is now done.
When I was 10
by Hilary V.M.
My dad hypes me up for volleyball. I take multiple
breaks for volleyball. I am ten and I got told on
May 25 that I was having a baby brother!
I am ten and I was also 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2
and 1. I am ten and never had a sibling to do anything.
I am ten and I used to always be very
cheerful and happy but now I’m not. I
am ten and asked why we needed so many
presents. until I opened it…and realized it was…
the end
When I was 5 and 6
by Hayden Z.
When I was 6 I went to my dad’s school, all the other teachers
would praise and adore me. I was just like a puppy with little
adorable eyes. I am 6 and adventurous, always wanting to do
things even when I couldn’t. I am 5 and scared of heights, but
when I turned 6 I could do anything.
