Things got louder and noisier for Twain 4th graders during their fifth week of poetry. Students discovered Onomatopoeia, when poets use words that imitate sounds from everyday life. I had shown examples of onomatopoeia words connected to people, animals, objects. We had fun reading the words out loud, trying to imitate the sounds. Afterwards we read and discussed the poem, “Swish,” by Nancy Bo Flood. In her poem Flood uses onomatopoeia to describe a younger sibling playing basketball with their older brother: dribble past/Set up a jump shot/aim/ shoot/ the ball spins round and round the rim until/swish!
Inspired by Nancy Flood, students wrote onomatopoeia poems describing their favorite activities and hobbies. So, readers turn up the volume and listen to these wonderful poems!

Volleyball
by Jayda D.
Me and my big sis love playing volleyball.
We shout out, “Ready! Set! Go!”
We play every day after school and the ball
goes Boom!
When we hit the ball wrong
it hits the net and goes back to us.
It helps us get better so we can hit
the ball higher.
My sister wins.
I will get her one day.

If you lose all your hunger,
You start to take damage.

without a body and nose?”
Nobody Knows!
All About My Hobbies
by Abby R.
I woke up and was still snoring ZZZZZ.
But when I woke up, I ate my pancakes
that my dad made.
I got dressed and started drawing.
I messed up and scribbled.
I got so mad!
So, my mom came in my room
and calmed me down.
I asked my mom if I could
go on my bike. She said, “Yeah.”
And I started dancing and moving
my legs with joy.
So, I went back to sleep
and had a brand-new day!.
