Last week was my last session with Swift 2nd graders for the 2022-23 school year. We read I’d Know You Anywhere, My Love by Nancy Tillman, and students visited their poetry folders to review all the poems written this semester. We then had a wonderful time sharing our favorites! Students in Ms. Urquiza’s class were anxious for school to end and for summer to begin, so they wrote a poem about it.

Summer Dreaming
Summer is a watermelon dream
Melis dreams of ice cream
it is a delicious dessert.
We want a day so hot
you will melt
for a cousin’s wedding
afterward, a visit to the biggest
waterpark in the world will cool us down
it is the only way we will survive.
Summer is a lemonade dream
it is sour and sweet and yellow
like the sun
and tastes great with a foot long hot dog,
ketchup, and mustard.
Summer is exciting like confetti
Summer sounds like wind blowing trees,
people talking, waves rushing at the beach
with wind and splashing
Summer feels fine
Summer is all mine
Summer is fun
it makes us want to run
