Sounds We Hate, Sounds We Love (8th Grade)

We all have sounds we adore and sounds that make us cringe. The 8th graders of Clinton asked themselves what these sounds were for them before we read “Sweet Like a Crow” by Michael Ondaatje. After exploring what similes were, students then created their own similes to describe their favorite and least favorite sounds. From funny to heartfelt, students reflected on the sounds of family members, nails on a chalkboard, car engines, and much more.

Laughs and Giggles
by Vivienne P.

The laugh like a gremlin
gliding across the room.
Seeing the radiant smiles
that look like suns makes
me laugh.
After getting yelled at
by the teacher it becomes quiet,
in the deep silence,
one bursts out laughing
like dancing grandmas.
Cackling like fire, scary like
a demon, but it always
makes me laugh.

Acting like a baby
by Sofia G.

His voice sounds like a
toddler always complaining
like that sound that makes
you want to die
like a cocky old man
giving you advice
like that rooster you
want to shut up every day

An Everyday Problem
by Muhyi U.

My cousins are as annoying as a
alarm clock at 7a.m.
My cousins are as loud as thunder.
My cousins are like waves in a storm.
My cousins snarl like snakes.
My cousins can be peaceful like fire
crackling.
My cousins are exciting like an ice cream
truck approaching.
My cousins are creepy like a floor creaking.
My cousins are silent like footsteps coming
from a ninja.
My cousins are like a million different
things all combined together.

Sisterhood
by Shamin A.

Your voice sounds like a whining toddler
that knows that they’re the problem.
like a caterpillar that never turns into a
butterfly.

Your voice is as loud as the dishwasher
running.
As scary as a swarm of ants chasing you.
As screechy as the chalk’s writing on a board.

I don’t hate you but please stay quiet
because you’re voice is as stupid as your
intelligence.

“How does an explosion feel?”
by Rahman K.

Joyful as a kid’s birthday party.
Stressful as a ruined birthday party.
Angry as a hostile crowd.
Salty as a Karen.
Amazing as a A+ on a hard test.
Hard as a concrete wall.

“Untitled”
by Josue O.

Vibing like a party
listening to rhymes like we have a lot of time
on time like a beat drop
808s sound like a nuke

“Whispers like Rain”
by Zubishah Z.

The rain falls like a tapping song
it’s been coming down all day long
Like a whisper from the cloudy sky
It lands on leaves and bounces high

It’s like the clouds are crying tears
washing away our worries and fears
The rain is soft, not loud or mean–
Just making everything fresh and clean

Rain falls like whispered secrets in the night
it dances on rooftops like tapping feet
It kisses the earth like a kissing bird
Then goes away with a quiet goodbye

Rain sounds like music in the air
like someone drumming everywhere
it taps like fingers at a glass

“Baby’s Crying”
by Fatima S.

Your voice is annoying as getting bad grades
Your as loud as a glass shattering
It’s frustrating me like losing a game
when you cry it makes me angry like a
gorilla
When you’re fake crying you sound like
Pinocchio said he’s a human
Your always being chaotic like there’s
a concert

“Babu’s Voice”
by Azizah A.

Her voice sounds like a rainy day,
loud as a monkey,
smart as Albert Einstein,
also a headache like my sister,
crazy as a dog,
irritating as someone chewing loud.

“My Family”
by Nathan

My family is as lovely as a
reunion, sometimes as annoying as
a buzzsaw.

“Ice in Matcha”
by Esha F.

as loud as a cat meowing
feels like a good summer day
as quiet as a library
tastes like a garden filled with flowers
as sweet as candy flowing in the air
just like nature’s sweet perfume
looks as good as a daylily
after taking a sip feels like I
entered a garden filled with green
spirit tulips

Ms. Karas (Group B)

“Untitled”
by Marcel D.

The first time I heard their voice
it was like a choir class during church.

“Noisy like an Animal”
by Faith P.

Your as loud as a baby crying
funny as a comedy show
crazy as a tornado or thunder storm
noisy as a lawn mower
silly like kids playing with toys/games
you’re kinda quiet as a Silent Fox.

“Rhythm of the Falls”
by Jair G.

The waterfall was like a curtain of rain
It splashes like a drumbeat, loud and plain.
The spray felt like a soft, cool breeze
Flowing like a river with perfect ease.
It hums a tune, gentle and bright.
A steady rhythm through day and night.

“Baby Crying”
by Hanin H.

I’m sorry Adam but when you cry
you sound like you want to get all
the house annoyed.
like someone who never liked to keep
the house quiet.
like you never want us to talk.
like a person who is putting headphones on
and playing music so loud.
like an ugly music going on.
like someone who doesn’t know how to sing a song.
like you could never get distracted with all
the games we get for you.
