Sounds We Hate, Sounds We Love (7th Grade)

We all have sounds we adore and sounds that make us cringe. The 7th graders of Clinton asked themselves what these sounds were for them before we read “Sweet Like a Crow” by Michael Ondaatje. After exploring what similes were, students then created their own similes to describe their favorite and least favorite sounds. From funny to heartfelt, students reflected on the sounds of family members, nails on a chalkboard, car engines, and much more.

by Kate N.

As irritating as a mouse dying

As unseemly as when you see someone
you don’t like outside

“To be whoever I want to be”
by Aryan R.

My voice can have a positive side
Bright as a rising son,
To warm as a cozy blanket,
To pure like a calling to nature.

My voice can have a negative side
Buzzed as a bee-hive,
Cold like a heart-break,
Old as the roman numerals.

My voice can be whoever I want
To be!

“As bad as it gets”
by Emina H.

Nails on a chalkboard is as bad
as it gets
No noise defeats the feeling
It’s strange like watching Alice in
Wonderland for the first time
It’s confusing like being frozen in time
It’s uncomforting like a crow’s screech
It’s terrifying like knowing one day
everything is over
It’s disturbing like the idea of spiders
crawling in your bed at night or
a dark anonymous attic.
It’s eerie like a cold shivering night
or like exploring a decaying city
Oh how I hate the sound

Nails on a chalkboard is as
bad as it gets.
