“power already in my bones” Corrupting the Sonnet

This week in class we read “My earliest memory is telling myself stories without” by Diane Seuss and expanded on some of the history of poetic forms we started with odes. We discussed how to change the construction of a sonnet through corruption, the way Seuss does in her poem and students wrote their own corrupted sonnets focusing on including details related to the five senses. Please enjoy their work below.

Camping

Cole C.

I remember when I first went camping

We were very active the first day, and

everyone started cramping. I was stuck

in a knot, everyone tired and sleeping

on their cot. And when they woke up only

breakfast was their thought. It rained and the day

was nice so we biked the terrain. When we

got the food and brought it home the smell

alone had them out of bed as fast as

a dog fetching a bone

I walk in power already in my bones

I walk in power already in my bones

Already I know that for this I am alone

The voices calling for the ball

I know that soon they will all fall

I will have VICTORY

Though downfall leads

And I can do better

Free food for me

One time I was eating at my favorite

restaurant and so my parents said “guys

go in we will find a parking space.” And

so me and my siblings went the other way

and I went to wash my hands to get

ready to eat and I waited 30

minutes for my parents until the food was

served and I told the waitress I don’t have money

on me and she said it’s free so the moment

I touched the burger I heard loud sounds and

I tasted the best food I have ever had

and when I was done I left and waited

and waited until my parents came and

Let’s say it didn’t end well.

My memories

Sam S.

When I saw my school, it was amazing.

I felt like I would be here forever.

I have had a lot of memories here.

When I first got my cats and touched their fur

I felt so happy and relaxed with them.

When I felt myself cry for the first time

It made me very sad and not happy

When I tried steak I thought it was the best

It made me feel good inside and outside

When I smelled lilacs I felt relaxed.

They smelled amazing like very sweet bliss

en su monte seco y padro

yo tengo más que el lepardo

porque tengo un bien amigo

The first time I went to Serbia

The first time I went to Serbia

I drove my grandpa’s car in

the countryside while in

the countryside I got

to ride a lamb and

when I got on it kicked me off

and it hurt really… bad
