For our 3rd week of poetry, Twain 4th graders thought about memorable places they have visited, whether it’s in their neighborhood or as far away as Mexico. Travel is about adventure and a discovery of new things. We discussed imagery, how poets use the five senses (sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste) to help readers imagine a place in their minds.
Together students read one of my poems called, “3rd grade Fieldtrip to the Silver Stallion Ranch.” My poem describes one of my favorite memories as a kid visiting a small ranch with my classmates in Markem, Illinois. I asked students to see if they identify the five senses within my poem. We leap over pumpkins, with vines that coil like sleeping snakes/We eat unwashed apples until our hands are sticky with their juice/ the neighing horses tethered to chains that jingle like loose coins.
Inspired by my poem, students used their five senses to describe special places they have experienced with family, friends and classmates. So, readers grab a map and make sure to visit these amazing poems and artwork below.

Landero y Coss
by Mia M.
I had touched the fresh flowers.
and my fluffy cat.
I had tasted tamales and chilaciles, tacos,
rice and beans and finally soup.
I had seen fireworks
and beautiful birds.
I smelled sweet flowers
and a strong perfume.
I heard children laughing with joy.
Halloween House
by Krystian K.
I touched scary moving Halloween decorations.
I had tasted yummy apples and candy.
I saw peek-a-boo clown, skeletons, ghosts
and purple lights.
I smelled the cold air.
I heard electronic decorations moving
and making sounds.
Mexico GTO la Moncado
by Deigo V.T.
toco las animales por su piel suave y caliente
Como comida Mexica por su rico sabor
ver el campo la naturaleza el bonito paisajes
oler el aire libre
escuchar a los grillos cantando porta noche
I touch the animals for their soft and warm skin
Like Mexican food for its rich flavor
See the countryside, nature, beautiful landscapes
Smell the open air
Listen to crickets singing for the night

At The Mall
by Julian D.
I felt the controller in my hands.
It felt like the aliens are actually
biting me.
Was…was that an alien ship!!?
(Pew! Pew! Pew!)
Upgrade. Yes!!
(Pew! Boom!) (Sniff)
Oh no. Slugs!
Get off me!!
Orange Fall Forest
by Leonel S.
As we walked in the forest, I felt sleepy,
like a sleepy golden snake.
I touched a tree, I heard an owl hooting
in the night.
My mom gave me berries to keep
me up.
I could not see a thing,
felt like two truck stacks.
I smelled the berry,
the one I was holding in my hand.
I didn’t finish, because it tasted
like sand.
Pool
by Alicia S.
At the pool, I touched the floaties
and jumped in the water.
I made a huge splash.
When I jumped, it felt
like it was raining.
I tasted some snacks, like chips,
and drinks, because I was
hungry and thirsty.
I felt like I was in a beach
because of my pool,
in my backyard.
I saw some bugs and I felt
like fighting them,
because I hate bugs.
They are like my enemy.
I smelled snacks,
because I love snacks.
I heard some music
because, why not?

Disney World
by Karla M.
I felt the hand of the Disney character,
it was so soft, but it was a little weird.
I tasted the beautiful taste of ice cream,
it was so creamy and tasted so good.
I saw a very fast roller coaster.
It was so fast, that I wanna go on it.
Sometimes, the air was so fresh,
I don’t dare to leave.
It was so crowded,
people talked way too much.
It was so fun!
My Trip to Britania, Philippines
by Kyze T.
Once we arrived at the island, I ran down the ladder.
The water was so beautiful, light blue.
As I reached out to feel the sand, it was so soft
and it made me happy.
I was about to get in the water, I could see
the light blue water.
When I jumped in and put on my snorkel,
I could see the beautiful colorful fish
swimming in groups.
I look around and hear and see my cousins
splashing each other.
I go in for another dive in the water
and taste the salty water.
Once I come back up,
I smell the delicious
fish and rice.
Sea World Madness
by Max V.
As soon as you walk into Sea World,
you smell the cool breeze.
Millions of rides, that you can lose count.
If you’re hungry, there are so many food stands.
Plus, gift shops, and sea creatures and many more.
So, make sure you are in Florida.
Plan your vacation near Sea World.

Soccer Practice Field
by Ian G.
I can feel joy when there’s people and the
confidence they have.
I could taste my cold and refreshing water
that gives me a boost.
I can see the people, passing the ball,
and that kindness and friendship
that warms my heart.
I smell the sweat and tears that show
the heart work and commitment.
When the game starts my heart warms up
and tells me “Go for it! Don’t worry
for the mistakes.”
When we win, the coach congratulates us,
and we hold a trophy each time in our photo.
I hear the excitement in my teams’ voice,
which makes me happy.
Beautiful Flowers
by Natalia H.G.
Feeling the beautiful breeze of the flowers.
Love touching the beautiful flowers.
Me and my family having a beautiful picnic.
Tasting a strawberry and blueberry smoothie.
Seeing the beauty of the flowers.
Smelling tulips, roses, and daisies.
Hearing the birds chirping
and beautiful tunes.
Adventures of Six Flags
by Mikayla S.
When I walk through the doors,
I smell the buttery popcorn.
Stuffing my nose with a strong smell,
as I keep walking, I hear kids and adults,
screaming of terror and joy.
As I get on a ride, I lift my arms
for the metal bar.
After I get off, I am suddenly hungry,
so, I go and run, til my nose gets runny
form the cold.
After I stop, I look to my right to see
pepperoni pizza and a bottle of Sprite.
