Poetry Can…

For Sayre’s 7th graders’ first week of poetry lessons, we focused on what poetry (or their chosen art/music/activity) can or cannot do, reading “what can a poem do?” by Darius V. Daughtery for inspiration. As a warm up, students congratulated each other for accomplishing everyday tasks in the morning as a reminder that poetry can celebrate even the mundane.

Basketball can…
Iker L.

Basketball blocks out everything
when playing it makes me feel
like jumping out of excitement

Music Can
Cora Q.

Music can make
me strong and
fearful like a
beast. Sometimes
it’s sad and boring
like rain.

What music can do
Christian T.

Music can inspire the youth
Music can rejoice the community

Music Can
Jake T.

Music can make you feel alive
But it cannot keep you alive
Music can make you feel invincible
But it cannot make you invincible

Music can make you imagine others’ POVs
But you are not them
Music can make you feel popular
But it’s not going to make you popular

You probably think you’re not a part of anything
But everybody listens to music
You probably think you’re the only fan of a genre
But many people love the same kind of music

You may feel tired
Music energizes you
You may feel lonely
Music is always there

Music can…

Music can make you feel empowered
strong
happy
sad
mad
music can save you

Poetry.

Poetry can heat my heart
make me feel like I’m floating
on volcanos of seas. Get my
heart pounding like hives of bees
