Planets, Solar Eclipses, & Poetry

This week all Hamline 6th graders could talk about is the solar eclipse that’s happening on Monday, April 8th. During an eclipse the moon will pass between the Sun and Earth, which will block the face of the Sun. I told students about special glasses that can be worn to protect their eyes and that they can build their own eclipse viewers. One student joked that the eclipse coming means the end of the world. Coincidentally the upcoming solar eclipse connected with the theme for our 5th session of poetry: Planets.

Together we read and discussed the poem “Another Planet,” by Dunya Mikhail. In her poem Mikhail uses similes and personification to imagine her own ideal planet. A comfortable world, and beautiful/a world without much smoke/ And even better the war has left its “r” behind and turned into love/ And the boats look like smiles on the water. Mikhail envisions a peaceful non-violent planet.

Inspired by Dunya Mikhail’s poem and the approaching solar eclipse, students wrote their poems, imagining their own unique planets.

Miguel’s Planet
By Miguel P.

On my planet it’s as hot as an oven and big as the sun.
On my planet there’s a mall full of fragrances.
On my planet there’s no school and it’s so peaceful.
There’s no fighting, no wars.

On my planet its fresh, everyone is outside
and not playing video games inside.

A Whole New Discovery
By Jesus S.

I found a new planet.
There is blue everywhere.
They speak English, I asked
“What is this place?”
They said the planet is called “Blaret.”
They drive cars but they use water for fuel.
The animals are nice, but weird,
they have three legs and one eye.
I asked, “Why is everything blue?”
They answered that it was like when
they were born.
They two suns and three moons.
Everything is made of this material
called “Blirium,” and its very strong.
And the animals talk.
It’s hard to get used to it, as the shape
of the planet is a hexagon and has a
cool but hot temperature.
It’s very peaceful, no one fights
and there are no diseases.
It’s a loving planet, where everyone
helps each other and the technology
is super advanced.

My planet is a giant planet.
It is also a planet with clean water.
The waves on the planet speak to us.
The sharks don’t eat people,
there will be alien like fishes on the planet.
There are blossom trees in a lot of places.
My planet will be beautiful like a butterfly,
and the moons will be beautiful in the sky,
and the moons will shine bright in the sky.

Hera
By Shamya J.

On my planet Hera is a fun planet
You can do whatever you want,
but no fighting or you will get kicked out.

On my planet it has everything you want, like video games.
On my planet there are no weapons.
On my planet there’s money from the trees.
On my planet its school for 2 hours
and for 2 weeks then we have break.
On my planet we love are families and friends
On my planet its lots of animals that nice.

On my planet everyone is kind
On my planet it’s warm and hot sometimes,
Every day on my planet you get a big house.

On my planet you can read if you love reading
On my planet it’s really big, it’s bigger than the earth.
On my planet there’s only mansions, there’s no poor people.
On my planet if you want to work you can, it’s up to you.

On my planet there’s so much food and money on the trees.
You can use the money to buy anything,
So, you won’t have to work and spend time with your family.

By Delani V.

My planet is big like the country of Asia.
The Pikmin on my planet collect treasure.

My planet is warm like a fireplace.

The fiery blowhog on my planet blows fire out of its snout.

The Water Pikmin are blue like the far oceans

and they are also good swimmers like a scuba diver.

The oceans on my planet sleep peacefully

The jungles on my planet make sounds from instruments.
