Opposite Poems

This week students at Waters wrote poems about opposites! In class we, fittingly, read “Some Opposites” by Robert Wilbur and talked about the confusing process of defining an opposite and making up our own. In the below poems, our student poets flexed their descriptive language skills and focused on how to use stanzas and punctuation to elevate the reading of their writing.

People you know

Cole C.

People you know can become

people you don’t.

Friends can turn into

enemies.

It’s sad, but I’m

happy.

I’m worried for the

future, but that’s

far ahead

I think I’m just

scared I might

lose a friend.

And with my next

wishbone I will

wish for friendships

to never end.

What is the Opposite

Loretta J.

What is the opposite of a ? mark?

An excited, ready for the day ! mark.

Is there an opposite of a

building?

Wait, yes, yes there is.

A lonely plot ready for a building

to be built.

What is the opposite of death

I think it would be life, a beautiful life that you enjoy.

What is the opposite of experiment?

A failed experiment,

or an explosion that ended

very horribly.

What is the opposite of opposite?

That is too hard, I’m done.

Florida Keyes

Jake K.

I have finally arrived at

the amazing place called the “Florida Keyes”

and yet the ocean can’t call for me

it’s covered in plastic,

far as the eye can see.

See, Alaska Oil’s melting the ground

The Amazon is burning down

Greenland’s a vacation spot,

Death Valley is way too hot,

Cows have almost gone extinct,

humans too, are on the brink,

As scientists try to find a link,

to another world so far away,

by the time we get there

we will have decayed.

Orleans is underwater,

and no one seems to be bothered.

The space junk is falling down,

mother earth has lost her crown

this is your last chance to change,

your decaying matter, your failing ways

From the turtles dying on the beach,

the whales no longer in the sea

the monkeys falling off the trees,

your grandkids’ grandkids plead to you

Change your ways to something new!

Opposites

Brennon H.

What’s the opposite of gummy?

Well it’s hard, like a rock

What’s the opposite of tough?

I think soft, definitely not rough

What’s the opposite of NASA?

It might be ASAN. A company that just sits in the earth’s core.

This is getting difficult, so why not make it easier

What’s the opposite of

water?

I’d think fire. If I said ice I’d be a liar,

All these opposites are making me tired so why not sit down,

take a breath and a sigh of relief.

Opposite Poem

Silas A

Let’s start with a simple word

A rainbow, a peach, a hog

But I’ll use a better word

A cute little dog.

The opposite of a dog, a cat

opposite of a cat is a lion.

A lion, a fierce monster, a cute

little baby must be the opposite, Oh,

no! He’s crying!

The opposite of a baby must be a man,

and for a man it must be a woman.

A woman would be a girl, and a girl is a boy.

And to a boy, his favorite thing, a nice little toy
