Starting off our 2nd week and Smyser Elementary, we explored imagery, the five senses, and writing from our memories! We looked at the poem “When I was Six” by Aimee Nezhukumatahil. Check out some of the poem the students wrote below!

Bryan C., “When I was 8”
My mom makes waffle for me
in the mornings. She would say
get two, but I would steal
three. My hand would get sticky
because the syrup would get on
my hands. It would smell really
good because of the blueberries.
That day it was my birthday I
forgot it was my birthday and
I was scared she saw me take
three waffles and she did but
didn’t care because it was
my birthday. I heard them talking
about a birthday but I didn’t
know it was about ME!!!

When I was 7 I used to
touch my mom’s makeup. And I used to
bite all her pretty lipsticks.
When I was 7 I sprayed all my
mom’s favorite perfumes in her room
When I was 7 I heard her laughing
at all my old baby videos. When
I was 7 I saw her crying on
the couch because of a movie. This is
when I was 7. Now I am 10 and miss
these but we will make new memories.

When I was three years old
I touched a basketball for the
first in my life and it felt awesome.
When I drop on the ground
it sounded really weird it sounded bouncy
It looked really round and was
orange with black stripes on it, it looked
cool. It tasted really weird I thought
it was food, but it tasted really bad.
It smelt like nothing.

soft pancakes in the morning and in
my bed. The taste of my dad’s
steak and veggies like broccoli
and sweet potato.
I smell my perfume to decide which
one I should wear every day.
The smell of Coca-Cola and
Sprite.
I hear music in my room all day
When I get ready for a party.
I used to hear my dog every
day but I don’t any more.
I see my Mom and Dad every
day, night and day. Moon and Sun.
I see my best friends at
school.

Alyssa C. “When I was 6”
When I was 6 my mom
wiped wet milk off my
mouth. I still remember trying
Cheerios for the first time.
I loved the smell of my
parents cooking during the
day. When I was 6 I heard
music of my parents’ car.
When I was 6 I remember
the cars, trees passing by while
my brother is sleeping. When
I was six.
Andrijana K. “When I was six”
When I was 6, I jumped on my brother
soft bed and messed up my brothers
hair it was so soft. I was six when
I tasted the softest bread. I was
six when I smelled my mom’s perfume,
the smell was like flowers. I remember
I used to hear my dog barking soo
much and it annoying me. When I was
6 I used to watch my dog eat his
food.
Zlata U. “When I was six“
When I was six war starts,
my dad was in Germany. When I was six,
I come in a land completely different
language. It was very hard.
But in two years living in Germany
I speak Germans like a girl who
comes from German. Teachers ask me
Where you from? I say Ukraine.
She says wow you speak so beautiful
German. I speak better than all my
friend better than my mom,
dad. Now I’m in America,
My name is Zlata.

Osbaldo C. “When I was 3”
When I was 3
I remember cartoons
playing on the TV. I
remember smelling sunflowers,
tulips, and roses. I remember
hearing birds chirping and
squirrels squeaking. I remember
tasting mushy apple sauce
melting in my mouth
I remember feeling ropes
that gave me rope burn.
Penelope S., “When I was 7”
When I was 7 I remember the fresh air breezing
past me as I ran through the park. I loved visiting
our neighborhood playground with my brothers. I
remember my younger brothers crying and yelling
as they played together. I remember smelling my mom’s
monkey bread baking in the oven. It was
my favorite breakfast. I remember tasting my mom’s
desserts as soon as she finished baking them
I loved trying new recipes. I remember seeing
my dad as soon as he got home from work
and giving him a big hug.
Elizabeth P.
I am 8 and mischievous. I got
into my mom’s sewing kit last week.
I could feel the sharp needle poke
my skin. I am 8 and love donuts.
I’ve never tasted anything like this
jelly filled donut. I am 8 and in love with
with treats. I can smell my mom
cooking vanilla cake in the oven.
Olivia T, “When I was 8”
When I was 8 I had my first
playdate with my best friend. When
I was in my pool I opened my
mouth and all the water went in
my mouth. It was my favorite drink.
I hid in the clothing in the
store so we never had to leave.
I grabbed the hose from the
backyard to put water on me
and my friends. I could still
hear the laughter when
I played with my friends.
I go to Subway every Friday
to bring to school. When I was
8 I used to eat paper.
