“Like Sunshine on a Rainy Day”

During our fourth poetry workshop for the 6th graders, we talked about space poetry a week after watching the eclipse. We first learned all about the United States Poet Laureate Ada Limón’s collaboration with NASA to send a poem to one of Jupiter’s moons! Then we learned about odes and read her poem “In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa,” in addition to watching the special animation video made for the project. After that, students wrote their own odes! Check them out below.

Thank You Fairy

by Daniel Y.

Fairies are great

like sunshine on a rainy day

whenever there’s a simple boko or Ganondorf himself

it’s got your back for round 2

(Inspired by the Legend of Zelda Series).

The Moon

by Pedro V.

I want to see the moon

I wish I could go to the rocketship

and land on the moon

and see the earth down there.

Taco Taco

by Michael M.

Dear taco of the world,

I LOVE YOU.

I have eaten so many of you

and you tasted so good.

Tacos can fix all my problems

they are like a first aid kit

to a wounded soldier.

D.J.W.

by Tiffane

D.J.W. I love the way you make

me laugh even when I’m down or sad

the way my face turns rosey when you

look me in the eyes

makes my tummy turn like the wind in the air

and the way your hair

blows in the wind makes me feel warm inside

like hot cocoa on a winter day and

this is something money can’t buy.

R.C.

by Tamia

The smile they have you can see it

from a mile away

there isn’t a day

that goes by where I don’t smile

and even at the darkest times

he’s always there for me

he stay on the phone with me

even if I’m just talking nonsense

the twinkle you put in my eyes

every time I see you feels so special

your pretty brown hair is so pretty

and you defined me even if I am wrong

you make me think my insecurities feel like

the most beautiful things

I’ve known you since the 1st grade

and I can’t wait to see what the future

has in store for our friendship.

The Meaning About the Galaxy

by Noah

The meaning about the galaxy.

The planet we live on produces our lives,

what we live in, and our emotions.

All the planets are connected in one

Jupiter, Mars, and every other planet we see

are connected. We might find more

than what is connected through our galaxy

and find what’s true.

The Moon

by Michael M.

The moon is so cool

the light can change itself

and it can make it into

a half and the light is so

relaxing and the moon

can make a solar eclipse.

Space?

by Clayton

The vast nothingness of space.
