Just Ratio It

This past Thursday at Hyde Park Academy, a group of students came into the 4th floor art room for pizza and an open mic. What they got was a poetry workshop and an audience of their peers to hype them into sharing their work. We read a poem of 1920’s Chicago slang (the petty pantry, the snuggle pup, the soup-and-fish) and discussed how language changes over time. Poets were challenged to write poems about their daily lives, using as much of the language of their generation as possible. But even if the young people of 3025 have no idea what rizz is, they will know what it means to connect with friends and dream of a bigger, better life ahead.

Slang Poem

by Kaden B.

omg another day… I’m cooked

will it be W or L?

I might just ratio it

the females are chalked

and the guys have no aura

nothing to rizz

after school the guys get boofy

now I’m at the crib chilling

geeked.

[Got love for the guys]

by Armarion L.

Got love for the guys

I love them with my heart

I love boofing in the basement

Just having our talks

I love having motion

For the lifestyle that I live

One day I wish to move into a big

House on the hills

Counting up my cheese cause

I love how it feels making

Foe new happy because it’s a beautiful feel

I wish to be rich and ride in a black

Spinning with the bros catch a hat

I wish to have a legacy and be remembered

For something legendary
