This week at Henry Elementary, we looked at a poem by Melissa Lozada-Oliva titled “My Spanish.” We discussed personification and repetition, and how these can change or strengthen a poem. We shared how it feels when people assume things about us or even we end up doing the assuming! Students were tasked to write their own poem using personification about an object in their life.

Yuritza C., “Freezing Life”
Cold night’s day
My favorite.
My nose crying constantly
I gasp and gasp
still my favorite.
The photograph sidewalks
slippery, slidey.
Of course it’s my favorite.
Wet hair like ice
steady as a statute.
Big puff hugging all around me.
suffocating me.
My favoriting feeling.
The statue we can make
My hands changing colors
My cheeks red and blown up like a balloon.
I change apparences
Still my favorite.
Makayla C., “Memories”
The memories, the memories
escape my eyes and roll down
my right cheek.
The memories, the memories
replay in my head, I
can’t pause them, they
live rent free in my
head.
The memories, the memories
good or bad? Does it
make me feel sad?
or mad.
The memories, the memories.
The memories, the memories.
Miriam E., “Hello Kitty Necklace”
This is my favorite necklace
This brings me joy
When I have it on I
feel special because I
feel connected
with another person
This necklace connects me
with a special person
in my life
This necklace is beautiful,
This necklace is like a tattoo
I always wear it every
single day.
This necklace moves with me
Everywhere with me.
Camila P., “Find Joy in Florida’s Sunsets”
For me, Joy is half love and
half regret
Joy is the waking up in
the clouds, and
dancing in the beach
Joy for me is sending
pictures of the sunsets
Joy for me is the
feeling of the sand
and waking up to a,
“Happy Thanksgiving,”
Joy for me, is missing
people, and celebrating
My Birthday.
