Imagery and Food Poems

During our second week of poetry at Sayre we focused on writing detailed imagery of familiar objects and our favorite foods. We started by writing collaborative descriptions of objects, expanding on the descriptions using the 5 senses (sight, touch, sound, smell, taste). We ended by using description to write a poem about our favorite food (thanksgiving food, mac and cheese, tacos, tortas, and chicken were at the top of the list).

Untitled (Collaboration)

A crayon, which can be found in a crayon box
has a color, rough texture, is made to make drawings.

Smells like colors.

A crayon is colorful and used to make paper
less dull, can be big or small.

Dressing

Dressing

smells

like

Thanksgiving.

Tastes like

I

want

more of it.

Mom’s Baked Mac and Cheese
Ariana A.

I love mac and cheese, but my mom makes the best.

Made only on the holiday, she bakes this dish

which smells like home and togetherness mashed all into one.

Warm and yummy, feels greasy, mushy and smooth.

But that’s the way I like it…my favorite

Mom’s mac and cheese.

The savory taco
Christian T.

My favorite food
how long I’ve craved this food.
The savory smell of potato
and the sweet taste of cheese.
Oh how long I have craved for
the savoriest of
tacitos de Papa.

Basketball (Collaboration)

The basketball is in my room.
It’s round, it’s orange, it has black lines.
It feels rough from the outside.
It sounds like boom boom boom.
It smells like rubber and ground.
It tastes like rubber.

Tortas
Itzel R.

Tortas, in a kitchen, look
like two pieces of bread, with
sour cream, avocado, tomato,
lettuce, and any meat, made into
a sandwich. It feels like a
warm bread with many flavors
added, it sounds like a crunchiness,
it smells like heaven with
many flavors adding up in each
bite. Torta is an amazing
food to eat and taste.

Taco
Benjamin T.

Found in a safe in heaven
round, and amazing.
It’s greasy, soft, and easy to break.
Sizzling, and steaming.
Smells like steak, and pure perfection.
