This week Twain 3rd graders considered many kinds of emotions such as embarrassment, shyness, sadness, and anger. We looked at the poem “J is for Jealousy” and talked about what it feels like to want objects, talents, good grades, or praise that someone else has. The poem begins with the lines: “If jealousy was an animal/ It would have emerald scales” – which gave us a chance to recognize “emerald” as another word for green. It also introduced new words like covetous and possess. After discussing how “Jealousy points out for us/ Our own deepest desires,” we brainstormed imaginary creatures for different emotions. I guess I am the only person who has yet to see the movie “Inside Out” – which students told me includes emotional creatures who live in the head of one of the characters! Students were asked to use ideas from their own imaginations, and not from the movie.

If loneliness was a creature
it would be really small,
have tiny bumps on its back
and would be black. It would
smell like paper. It will come on
to you when you are lonely.
It makes quiet noises, and
watches other people do stuff.
L is for Loneliness
by Ezra C.
If loneliness was a creature it will have a frown.
It will smell like tears, it will sit in the corner of the room.
Loneliness will sit on the slide while watching everyone else
play on the swings. Loneliness never talks to her classmates.
H is for Happiness
by Leila P.
If happiness was a creature it would
look fluffy and nice with 2 eyes
it would smell like plums
it would do the
splits, cartwheels, and back walkovers
and front walkovers and many other
gymnastic tricks, too. It would go with
her friends and play all day and
make other people happy. It would also
jump around like crazy.
J is for Joy
by Ava D.
Joy smells like flowers blooming in the
Spring.
Joy travels around the world to make other
people smile.
Joy is a cute creature.
Joy is as big as a tree.
Joy only has three fingers.
Joy has yellow skin
Joy smells like flowers blooming in the
Spring.

Calmness
by Nathalie M.
Calm is a beautiful
snow leopard. It has
multi colored fur and eyes.
Its eyes glare at the sky
at night. She has a
unicorn horn. She is
like a princess and does not clean the
floor. Her paws leave
heart prints.
When she is worried,
she does not do
a little flinch.
She loves lollipops.
Sadness
by Bella & Mackenzie
Sadness has 7 tentacles and
could look like a
blue jellyfish with teary eyes
and tears running down its cheeks.
Sadness could smell like
salty tears.
Sadness could look like sleeping
all day and crying, too.
Sadness could talk in a low, deep,
cracky voice
and live in a gloomy cave
in the ocean.
If sadness was an animal it
would be a jellyfish.
Sadness’s favorite color is dark blue
and it’s least favorite color is pink.
Sadness cries in a shadowy corner and
could stay and cry
in a gloomy cave, forever.
J is for Joy
by Natalia W.
If joy was a person
she would have long rainbow hair,
a rainbow dress and a joyful smile,
rainbow shoes with smiley faces and
she would always wear new dresses!
Joy would smell like cupcakes and
rainbow unicorn poo.
Joy would play with her friends
and give them marshmallows and
Joy would never be embarrassed even
if she did a funny dance.

If kindness was an animal it will hop around
It would be fluffy
It will go in gardens
It would have two eyes
It will have a tail like a poodle
Sometimes it would play with you like a puppy
It likes to play as a child
It would be cute as a hamster
It would be fluffy as a pillow
It would be shy like a puppy coming to a new home
Sometimes it would cuddle with you
It loves to be warm as kindness

If kindness was a creature it would
have yellow skin and violet hair
and blue eyes and it would give
compliments to people and it would do
kind things to people

Beasty Emotion Poem
The Kindness Creature
helps people
it has welcoming features
like smiles and handshakes
to show you around.
It shows up when you are sad
The Kindness Creature is
as clean as a clean window
and clean as a freshly-wiped whiteboard
-Julian
The Sad Beast with blue eyes
lives in the woods
and shows up when someone needs to cry
like when no one will play with you and
you are alone
or you stub your toe so hard.
The Sad Beast’s head
hangs down to its feet
its voice groans and moans.

Not like the Evil Creature that has
diamonds all over it
and comes to destroy the world.
-Marco
Not like the Envy creature that is
small with laser eyes.
