If I Were in Charge of the World

What does it mean to be in charge of something? What are things you wish you were in charge of? These are the questions Twain 4th graders pondered over for our 8th week of poetry his past Tuesday. The majority of students thought that being in charge means being the boss, or manager of a business, a leader or the president. I told students that being in charge means making important decisions or changes that can impact others.

Together we read the poem “I Were in Charge of the World,” by Judith Viorst. In Viorst’s poem, the speaker, a child imagines what life would look like if they were in charge. Some ideas the speaker describes are silly: I’d cancel oatmeal, Monday mornings/ A chocolate sundae with whipped cream and nuts would be a vegetable. While others are serious and thoughtful: There’d be brighter night lights, healthier hamsters, and basketball baskets forty-eight inches lower.

Inspired by Judith Viorst, students wrote poems describing what they would do if they were in charge of people, animals, places and things.

If I was in Charge Of Building Houses
by Silas M.

If I was in charge of building houses …
I would have to make space to build,
but it could take a long time.
I would have to plan before I build,
planning can help you know what to do.
Do it little by little, like playing the fiddle.

Do it little by little, like playing the fiddle.

I would get some wood to build,
wood is a common thing you need.
I would also have to get bricks, bricks
are for the walls.
I would have to make it thick.
I would have to let people choose the floor.

To pick the type of wood for the floor,
I would have to paint the color they picked.
You don’t want to dye.
Just pick the color within the floor.
