I should be me – Persona poems

For our 12th week with Waters 6th graders, we explored Persona Poems. These are poems written in the voice of someone else. For this lesson we read one of my poems (!!) titled “Lavender” and inspired by the 1996 film adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel, “Matilda”. After watching Matilda clips for context, we read my poem, discussed how to convey a fictional character through a poem, and students wrote their own persona poems. Take a look below and enjoy!

Mbappé
by Anthony L.

Just imagine being 26 years old and
having won a world cup at 18 years old.
and carrying a team scoring 12
goals. His pace is faster than
Haaland’s pace, his power shots and volleys
are monster shots. Defender can never keep up
with his foot work.

Sophia
by Lola M.

We all know that Sophia is so cool
she does dance and she is good at it,
it depends if she eats, or doesn’t eat,
or what she eats.
her besties are Lily Lola Addie
we are her bestie boos
her fave friend called her
over in kindergarten.

Troy Bolton from High School Musical
by Augie K.

Bolton. I have to represent that last name. I’m the basketball boy.
I should be me. I guess that’s why I’m in a musical.
And why Zac Efron plays me. Classic musical, right? I hope
so. I hope everyone is always good. But bad when they
need to be. The perfect summer in the perfect paradise
people call High School Musical, then that’s all right.

Persona Poem
by Alvaro L.

they like to play with games
they have scrambled eggs
their best friend is never
the most important thing to them is family
they look for love
they hate people telling them “you can’t do that”
they are really smart
their gender is male
their name is who

A Wolf
by Wally S.

What if you were a wolf
what if you didn’t have
a name
didn’t need the past
only the future
only today
hunt for food like a scholar for knowledge
only care for you and your pack
don’t need to learn only, to live
