“I am so sunny, you need sunglasses to see me”

For our third week of poetry, Twain 6th graders explored ideas about weather. They were asked the question “What type of weather describes your own personalities? We discussed how the weather and seasons can reflect our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Sadness might be the heavy rain causing floods, happiness or joy are the gold and orange Fall leaves and anger, a wild tornado.

Together we read the poem, “Rain, Snow, and Other Weather,” by Lauren Stacks. In her poem Stacks uses metaphors to compare her own personality to the weather and give herself weather-like characteristics.  I’m the slush at the bottom of your work pants/but I can easily be the melting snowflakes clinging to your long lashes/ But you take me as I am/ And never forget to carry your umbrella. Stacks embraces her own uniqueness and unpredictability and wants others to do the same.

Inspired by Lauren Stacks, students wrote their own poems in which they embodied the elements of nature. So, readers make sure to check the weather status and enjoy these published poems.

Chicago Weather
By Abel G.

Chicago weather is very unpredictable,
like my emotions.
First, it’s a clear sky that makes
everyone goes outside
at the beaches.
Then suddenly the weather
changes to a massive thunderstorm.
Everybody goes inside.
Then a tornado comes from
the outside of the city,
filed with rage and sadness,
Taking the rage out by destroying
everything in its path.

I’m a Fall Girl or Winter Girl
by Melodie R.

I’m a Fall girl.
I love the temperature.
It’s not too hot and not too cold,
It’s nice.
I love the clothes.
I love the pretty leaves,
They are all type of colors.
I love how it looks in the park
at night.

I love summer.
I can go to any beach.
I can swim every day
but it might get too hot.
But if I’m in a pool,
I don’t care about
anything.

I Love Spring,
I love the flowers.
I think of love when
I think about it.
I love it the best,
every flower beautiful.

I Love Winter.
It’s nice and calm.
I love the soft nice snow,
I like how it’s cold.
The snow so fluffy.
Beautiful cold.

I love al seasons, but
Spring and Fall are my fav,
because one reminds me of love
and one is beautiful.

Untitled
by Liam Z.

I’m someone with an ego,
When it’s cold and a dark night,
I show my true potential,
like a tornado.
When it’s any weather, I can win.
If it’s cold and blue,
only I can stop myself.
on a hockey rink, soccer
field, football field.
I can be a monster.

I Am the Spring
By Olesia H.

I am the flowers,
that are coming in the Spring,
that are opening and shining
with their beautiful smell and texture.
I am the flowers.

I am the white tree that
loves the sun and rain,
that blossoms in the Spring,
with the beautiful white flowers,
that makes the trees white.
I am the white tree that
loves the blowing wind that
blows on you.
I am the white tree.

I Am the Weather
By Miriam V.

I am the weather,
I can change at any moment.
I am the rain on dark
cloudy days.
I am the flowers blooming.

I am the weather,
On snowy days I am
a snowflake slowly falling
from the sky.
I am a snowman getting
covered by more and more
snow every day.

I am the weather,
I am the crunchy leaves
on the sidewalk.
I am the pumpkins on
people’s porches,
getting smashed and
carved every year.

The Cool Wind
By Craig T.

The cool wind is blowing outside.
The Winter is here.
Wind blowing out on snowflakes,
helping them reach on to anything,
having the cool wind blow on your face,
having a cool wind and 37 degrees.

I can go out of control,
making big blizzards along my way,
having people in their houses,
watching me move trees and more.
Hot chocolate is my rival.
It’s too hot and too steamy for
my cold desire.

One by one people get sick,
and no one wants to come with me.
I get snow and pile it up,
to get attention,
but no one’s there.

Alone in the snow.

Summer
By Yannis F.

I’m the hot sun,
Shining bright as a diamond,
The popsicle looking into my eyes,
Making my mouth watery.

The Moon
By Izabella G.

I am the moon
I control the ocean waves
I am the night

I am a hurricane
I am unpredictable
I am wild and free.

Fall
By Miranda L.

I am Fall leaves
you step on with your feet,
Crunch, crunch

I’m the candy you give
to the kids on Halloween.
I love candy!

I am the leaves
that fall on your head
when you have a picnic.

I am the cool mid
air when you go play
outside with your ball.

I’m the Sun
By Melissa H.

I’m the bright yellow sun,
I make people bloom,
with the joy of a butterfly.

I’m the bright yellow sun,
that make to make you play,
in the pleasant summer day.

I’m the bright yellow sun,
that makes trees grow,
the colors of a rainbow lorikeet.

I’m the bright yellow sun,
that makes the temperature hot,
It makes water disappear.

I’m the bright yellow sun,
and I’m a star.

My Seasons
By Montserrat H.

I am the soft Fall breeze,
the leaves falling off trees,
the wind making your hair flow.
Making you grab a coffee and blow.

But I can be thunder,
making you want to blunder.
You wincing in fear,
thinking my storm is near.

Yet, last, I’m the warm breeze,
embracing you while the wind
goes through the trees.

My rainbow peeking out after the storm,
making you fuzzy and warm.

Unpredictable Weather
By Alan F.

I am the snow that falls
and wants to be melted.
As the snow falls, I wait.
You’ll need a jacket
to not freeze.
The blizzard passes.

I am the rain that becomes
strong or weak.
Hitting the Earth with force.
Causing tornados
and strong winds.
The storm calms,
darkness comes.

I am the stars that
shine rarely in the darkness.
Still dim, but noticeable.
until the light comes.
Darkness passes

The wind is strong
as it screams.
It pushes you
and makes you stumble.
It causes tornados
and ruins things.

Finally, everything is calm.
The storm, the wind, the snow,
the rain, all becomes silent.
The sun is setting . . .
Go back home.

I Am All the Seasons
By Mya O.

I am the breezy wind that
make you want to snuggle
with a blanket.
I am so sunny, you need
sunglasses to see me.
I am the sunflowers that are
blooming from the ground.

I am the ocean waves that
roar through the wind.
I am the pink dotted windmill
that spins round and round.
I am so foggy, you need
to look closely.
