How to Sneak Like a Snake

For our 4th session with Waters 6th graders, we delved into the wonderful world of similes. Like metaphor, similes are all around us, especially in music. We saw similes in action when we watched “I’ll Make A Man Out of You” from Disney’s Mulan, then we read Ada Limon’s “How to Triumph Like a Girl”. We talked about why the poet would compare herself to a horse, then students wrote their own simile-driven poems about the animal of their choice. Take a look below:

How to have the memory of an Elephant
by Ilora P.

The ears flop back, & forth
The tusk drinking water
and the giant footsteps on the ground,
That time you know its an elephant,
Elephants remembering memories
from when they were a kid,
and humans barely remembering
where they put the TV remote,
seeing and capturing like a camera,
elephant ↑,
still seeing but forgot the moment
they see it,
human ↑,
Elephants’ memories can never be

Sneaky as a snake
by Aiden A.

What animal do you feel like most?
That’s what they said.
I answer with snake.
They are sly, and quiet,
Maybe shy, maybe giant
They never forget to finish a job.
They eat food even when it’s
big or small.
They want to be kings of the forest
Like how I want to rule my life

How to care like a cat
by Augie K.

A cat doesn’t care
A cat doesn’t like you
That’s what they all say
The cat will comfort you
They’ll curl up in your lap
They don’t care what other cats or people think
I wish I was like that
They get to sleep all day
They have an easy life
They have my dream life

How to Adore a Pup
by Lily J.

If you want to adore a little puppy,
you must love them as long as your heart pumps
play with them like you play with toys
walk them like you walk to school
pet them as much as you brush your hair
let your pup lick you as if a loving hug
snuggle with them as if cuddling with a plushie
help them when sad like how you cheer your friends up
let them protect you as if a body guard
and finally choose them as if choosing a life long partner

How to Hop Like a Bunny
by Isabella R.

bunnies are my life
bunnies fly through the air like birds
Vienna bunny is my bunny
no hope is lost when they are near
bunnies & carrots
dark means dark and bunny means love
bunnies are just cool like that
bunnies have fluffly tails like clouds
their ears stand proud
they are me
