Today was the first day I worked with the young poets from Ms. Zepeda’s 3rd grade class at Perez Elementary School. After playing some games to get to know each other, we read the poem “City City” by Marci Ridlon. The main focus of our first day was to learn about the structure of poetry. Specifically, the difference and relationship between lyric, line, and stanza. From today until our last session we will dissect poems by breaking them up into lyrics, lines, and stanzas. We played a game in which the class was divided into 2 teams. Then, I ask the teams to give the lyric or line from a particular part of the poem. For example, I would ask the teams to give me the 1st lyric in the 2nd line of the 3rd stanza. If they got it right their team got a point. The game ended in a tie!
