‘For fortitude fills each word that I speak.’: How We Talk Poems

Students read Langston Hughes’ poem, ‘Motto,’ and then wrote their short poems using modern slang.

 “Motto” by Langston Hughes

I play it cool

And dig all jive

That’s the reason

I stay alive.

My motto,

As I live and learn,

               is:

Dig And Be Dug

In Return.

Lesson Note:  “The world of teenage slang is a vibrant and diverse linguistic landscape, constantly evolving and adapting to young individuals’ ever-changing trends and interests. It is a language continuously shaped by the collective influence of youth culture, peer pressure, social media, and popular entertainment.”-Medium.

My brother walking calling us lil’ bro

Looking and waiting for the response of wsp

When he doesn’t we reply with mb

B meaning bad

He replies with it’s chill

We then ask him to play

He says alr ofc

We tell him to be fr

He plays after we all lay

Off to sleep without one peep

How we talk

Oh look, that’s the huzz!

Oh look, that’s the chuzz!

I’m proud to say he’s the huzz

Even though it’s probably one sided.

Oh the huzz

My huzz

My huband

Ew its the chuzz

No, I don’t like it!

My enemy

I like those words because they slip of the tip of my tongue

They match with anything

They start a burst of laughter

 MIa is here

by Mia S.

I speak with pride, each phrase I craft,
A tapestry woven, no second draft.
In meetings, I’m clear, with eloquence bright,
Ideas take flight in the soft morning light.

When challenges rise, I stand resolute,
My voice steady, my stance absolute.
I don’t falter, I don’t retreat,
For fortitude fills each word that I speak.
