Food Memories (7th Grade)

Many of our 5 senses are deeply connected to memory. This week the 7th graders of Clinton reflected on their favorite foods and the people, places, and things connected to them. After reading “From Blossoms” by Li-Young Lee, students reflected on their strongest food memories and how to use the 5 senses to create powerful imagery. Students wrote about a wide range of foods, reminiscing about family members, celebrating heritage, and savoring the joy of eating.

“Watermelon”
by Aliah P.

Watermelon reminds me of a summer vacation.

It sounds like freshly chopped wood.
It smells like a sunny, and bright day in summer.
It looks like the shape, triangle.
It tastes like a dip after going into the pool.
And it feels like a beautiful breeze of summer.

“Cake in My Mom’s Kitchen”
by Jeslyn U.

The cakes my mom makes
sounds like flowers.

It looks like a nice car.

Along with the taste
like a hot dish.

It smells like a sweet
self of my mom.
My mom’s sweet dishes make
me feel warm.

“من السوبر ماركت”

في شو بذكرني الفراولة ؟

“Spaghetti”
by Youssouf R.

Spaghetti reminds me of my mom
how it sounds like sizzling
smells like a flower, it looks like
silky yellow lines but tastes so
nostalgic, it reminds me of my mother
feeling like water slipping into my
throat.

“Strawberries”
by Maryann M.

Strawberries are like a morning on
a summer day.

Strawberries are sometimes crunchy or
soft.

Strawberries smell like a fruit farm,
sweet and earthy soil.

Strawberries have a lot of shapes, some
look like ovals, hearts, and some are
big or small.

Strawberries taste like a sweet snack on
a sunny summer day.

Strawberries feel like a soft and
wavy blanket.

“Tres Leches Cake”
by Yuritzi G.

Tres leches smells sweet and nice
And it feels like a hug from dad
And looks like a huge cupcake
And it tastes sweet like my Birthday
And it smells like Home.

“Untitled”
by Zintha A.

Mangoes remind me of back home when
my Grandma and I use to pick up mangoes together

It sounds like myself remembering my special
person every moment I see it, feel it, and taste it

It smells so sweet and fresh

It looks like a soft bed

It tastes like last year’s summer

It feels like me talking to my special
person while smiling

“That Shawarma”
by Faiq I.

Walking into the restaurant I
felt a blessed breeze delighted
with a side of ease

biting into that Shawarma I
felt a crunch, I said “That’s my
lunch”

the smell like a fire place had
lifted me into a dire state

that looked like a carpet wrapped
and rolled ready to be sold

biting into it, it tasted like
heaven a place to be led in

that feeling I felt, felt like a
warm hug from mother, I couldn’t
even utter

“Untitled”
by Brisa R.

The idea of pomegranates remind me of how
beautiful it is to spend time with my cousins in
Mexico.

From my grandmother’s tree,
we ripped off the crimson red orbs
hearing the laughter from out of us
all.

Cutting open,
we breathed in the
floral scent, allowing
us to forget our struggles.

Through it stains,
it’s a stain I’ll
cherish
for it’s a reminder
that it’s not over yet.

“Ferrari of Foods”
by Noman V.

Falafel memories from time in Greece.
like a warm warm hug from an aunt.
Walking across past the man with a
hat holding a sign with Falafels on it.
A waterfall in my mouth
juicy the Ferrari of foods

Falafel feels like a sharp mountain
sounds like a group of pebbles
smells like an air refreshener
tastes like winter
looks as round as an egg.

“Tostones”
by Elijah B.

From a place I went in a different time
A time of Joy
So many memories it felt like a crime
I was a younger boy
Sounds of a chewy, crispy chip
smells of my local restaurant
looks like a yellow frisbee

Ms. Logothetis (Group B)

“Banana”
by Yusof R.

Bananas remind me of my cousin’s leg because his leg
is shaped like it. It reminds me of Indonesia because
there are a lot of monkeys and they like bananas.

Banana sounds like how you eat marshmallows
because it’s soft and nice.

Banana smells like a clean tree that gives
out nice smells.

It was like a long stick that is yellow
and big.

It tastes like sweet honey.

It feels like music.

“Ayam Goreng”
by Ramzan H.

Saya saka makan ayam goreng, kalau saya
makan ayam goreng saya teringat malaysia.
Bunyi seperti crunch mdca makan karipap,
Mercan kalay lagi masak,
Bau seperti Bau macam karipap,
Katil yang bersih dan mantap atau pun sedap,
Nampak macam sudah benar-benar masak,
ayam goreng itu gemuk seperti karipap.
Ayem goreng bunyi seperti makan karipap,
Kalau saya lagi makan ayam goreng macam
makan karipap.

“Food with Legendary Memories”
by Mustafa S.

Food with memories? I’ll definitely go
with Sambosah.

Both crunchy & soft when you
chew on it.

So strong you could smell
the spice on it.

Looks like a fat triangle,
looks like me to be honest.

So spicy feels like your
mouth is on fire, you might wanna
call the firefighters before it starts
a fire.
feels like eating in Iftar like
the good old days!

“The Milk”
by Niara J.

Milk reminds me of my puppy that is
all white and soft.

It sounds like a silent library
quieter than ever.

Milk smells like dairy because that’s
where it’s made from.

It looks Plain White like my
mother’s white clean rug she never let’s
anyone on.

Milk tastes like cream but it’s
more like water and not foamy but bubbly.

It feels like water but it’s not
it’s definitely liquid.
