Comic Poems!

This week in Ms. Smallwood and Ms. Hernandez’s classes we read an excerpt from Cartoon Dialectics by Tom Kaczynskki and discussed how something can both be a comic and a poem. We came up with some guidelines for each and saw how they could be combined in the poem we read and in our brainstorming activity. Students then made their own poetry comics based on what we read or their own experiences. There were so many amazing comic poems, please enjoy a selection of just some of them!

Elements

Leila C.

Plain Text:

Elements.

They burn hot

Give us life

clean waters flow

Earth stays heavy.

The dark void.

The cool air.

The missing one?

Power.

Life

Earth – Power – Water

Air Fire

void

Darkness

Charlie

Plain Text:

Laying there all alone

then I see it in the darkness

what is it

maybe it’s just the light

but then…

I hear it talk

“where are your parents”

I was too shocked to move

then it all went black

I feel it near me… then I wake up

“it was just a dream”

It started with fire

Levin M.

It started with fire

but we wanted more

and more…

and more…

until nothing could stop us.

except ourselves…

Life is confusing

Abbie L.

Plain Text:

Life is confusing

Why challenge it?

If we really have no control of others…

Why laws?

If we really just can’t…

Why have we?

If we aren’t allowed to…

Why do we?

The Universe

Sam S.

Plain Text:

Fire is a powerful thing, very dangerous.

Green is a color, but also a thing.

Earth is the place where we live.

Water! There is a lot of it.

Air is everywhere, always moving.

Humans are everywhere, and it is what we are.
