This week the poets from Latino Youth High School studied couplets. Rhyme is the one of the most used literary devices in poetry and Hip Hop music. After listening to Tupac Shakur’s song “Changes” the poets were charged with creating their own Hip Hop verse. In the song “Changes” Tupac uses a series of couplets, the poets had to create 8 couplets (16 lines, or 8 bars). But the theme of the song sparked a lively discussion among the poets about some of the injustices in the world. The conversation led to the role of Hip Hop, and poetry, in speaking about these injustices in a way that entertains yet makes one aware. To catch their verses stay tuned for the next post from the Latino Youth High School poets!
