“Black so cool it must be golden”

Black History Month is a time for celebration and reflection, and this past Thursday, Hyde Park High’s poets celebrated their own Blackness. Called on by Gwendolyn Brooks’ “Primer for Blacks,” the poets took to the page. In other important news, Hyde Park’s poetry club members (excluding faculty advisor Ms. Gholston and myself) have officially named the space “The PC.” Please enjoy these three poems, and join us in celebrating these young Black men.

I’m Black

Davion D.

I’m Black and I’m proud say

it loud I’m Brown as tree Brown

as coffee beans Brown as a Bear

I’m Black as night cold winter sky

Black can’t be defeated my Black so fast

it might beat a cheetah Black so strong

it can’t be broken Black so cool it must

be golden Black so great they made

a population out of it my Black is

great my Black is gold my Black

is one great goal

Blackness is me. Why did it

choose me I don’t know. I know

that it’s dark you see the moon in

the sky. The black that I feel is

in the air we breathe or maybe

what I feel in my lungs is me.

Black

by Ty’Shon

It means a lot to me because

i am black, Black comes from

my family and culture, Black

is a plain black color, why am i

black, how am i black, am

i black forever? people don’t

like black but i love you

Black.
