Being 6 is gone in a blink of an eye

Oh, nostalgia. It’s a powerful feeling, and one that 7th graders at Waters explored with the Aimee Nezhukumatathil poem “When I Was 6”. Before we read the poem, I asked students to think back to their favorite or most memorable age. What made it so memorable, what made it so good? Students wrote about a wide range of ages; I hope you enjoy reading their reflections on age as much as I did!

When I was 5
by Penny M.

Me and my cousins run up the harshly carpeted
stairs, and bump into all the shelves.
we jump on the disassembled couch cushions,
like the floor is lava. we laugh, and eventually
someone gets hurt. not as fun anymore.
my grandma measures us against the wall.
she said I’m growing fast, eventually, we leave.
and everyone is sad. I’ll see them next
year.

When I was 6
by Aria M.

Talking and laughing is all you’d
ever hear from me
creativity and happiness skyrocketing
my bsf aubrey and silvia
we’d do everything without a
care in the world
N o worries
being 6 is gone
in a blink of an eye

When i was 9
by Milo M.

when i was 9 battles raged in my basement
soldiers in spartan armor, march witch spears
archers rain arrows down from the castle
me and theo’s swords chinck against the evil soldiers armor (not theo r.)
elves rushed past as giants swing clubs at the wall
crash!
the wall falls, leaving it defenseless
the armies charge me and theo leading the way
boom! fires burst as bombs made of magic appear beneath our feet
the wizards have planted dark crystals in the ground
luckily i diffuse them as the wizard guards are being challenged by our army
crackle! the enemy flag lays upon the ground burning
we’ve captured the castle just in time to watch tv before dinner
