“Autumn, little autumn”

Twain 3rd graders were eager to know what we would be doing for our 2nd session. We talked about things that poets do, such as pay attention to details and pay attention to how our senses help us to experience the world. We talked about being on the lookout for interesting words and phrases.

We then worked from a lesson created by Mayda Del Valle, which introduced us to the poem, “Autumn” by Raimundo Garcia Hernandez. Students quickly observed that the poem consists of four stanzas, each of which begins with the line “Autumn, little autumn.” We talked about how the line gives the poem a musical quality, and in one class, we even sang the line as a chorus! The stanza “Autumn, little autumn/ you leave the trees/ all bare” led us to clarify the distinction between bare and bear; before discussing some of the characteristics of autumn (fall), winter, spring, and summer. Students worked hard to brainstorm sensory information about the seasons, such as wind that makes a whistling sound; the smell of fresh cinnamon rolls or barbecue; the taste of tangy warm cider; the sight of freshly-fallen white snow or colorful flowers; and the grainy feel, or touch of sand on a beach. From there students worked on first drafts of poems, a sample of which you can read here. Enjoy!

cold you are.

Winter, little winter you
make our noses red.

Winter, little winter is when
Santa comes to town.

Winter, cold winter
makes me cold and enjoying my hot chocolate
with melted marshmallows

Winter, cold winter
I taste my chocolate with
marshmallows melting in my mouth
as sugar melts in my mouth
Winter, cold winter
I see the sparkly snow as it hits the ground

Winter, cold winter
the cold snow hits me as the
wind pulls it to me

Winter, cold winter
as I hear the snow crunching
with every step I take
Winter, cold winter
I make snow angels with my family

Winter, cold winter
I feel the air pull really cold air
to me

When I taste the seasons
summer fresh air
fresh flowers of spring
the cinnamon of fall
cold air on my tongue in winter

When I look at the seasons
summer looks sunny
spring looks warm
falls looks like leaves are changing colors
winter looks so snowy
