For my last day with Homeroom 302 at Waters Elementary, the students described what they learned about writing and themselves through the process of writing poetry. They first completed a brainstorm activity where they described their thoughts on poetry. Below are some of the things they wrote. They then wrote their own Ars Poetica poems, or poems about poetry.
Poetry is…
a world where imagination thrives.
an expression of yourself.
Poetry can…
help me cope.
be anything.
give the world more opportunities.
help you understand your feelings in a deeper way.
be about itself AKA Ars Poetica.
Writing makes me feel…
like an explorer, my dreams come true and many places become a reality.
understood.
free.
Writing teaches me…
my feelings.
how to advance and grow.
I write because…
I need to release bottled up feelings.
it’s a place where I can express myself when no one listens.

Poetry is a hidden language
can be written anonymously
can reveal unspoken truths
can help you look within
can solve hidden mysteries.

Writing is a pleasure
a world where everything is to your will.
Why was it here?
To journey to the subconscious
to learn every aspect of yourselves.
Writing is a gift.

Poetry is interesting.
It’s like a wake up call saying ring!
I wish I could describe it with better words,
but it’s like my stomach is filled with many birds.

isolated by myself

helping me be the best i can
giving everyone a chance to be heard
