“a cake filled with planets”

After not meeting last week because of Parent-Teacher Conferences and Election Day, it was good to return to Twain 3rd grade classrooms this week! The key term this week was imagery, which many students correctly understood as being related to pictures and photographs. We talked about how poets often use descriptive words that awaken the senses and help to paint a picture. We read and discussed the poem “Chuckles and Knuckles,” written by Cambria H., a former student at Kozminski Community Academy. Students chuckled and gasped at some of the surprising images the poem suggested. I challenged students to have fun with out-of-the-box thinking to create surprising imagery of their own. Enjoy some of their work, here!

Would you like to see
a cat made of clean water with a
car filled with dirt?
a pencil made of air,
a unicorn going to school,
a tree made of money,
a human made of books,
a whale holding the ocean,
a spider eating a big school,
a dog as a teacher?

Elias M.

A cake filled with planets
is something I would like to see.
Would you like to see a car filled with
frogs?
I had a dream that my class was filled with posters
I would like to see a dog
made of a calendar

When I woke up my mom’s laptop
was typing by itself! Then at school the words
from the board were attacking me!! When I found
my pencil it was made out of spikes! When I was
looking for my phone the pillow ate my phone!

Then when I went out for a walk everybody
turned into robots! Then I saw a person made
of dust! Then I go to the beach and when
I try to go in the water, it spit at me!
Then I saw my teacher made out of air!
I got a box at the front door but it wanted
to eat me!

Would you believe if
we told you we saw
a potion that gives you
5 minutes of Disneyworld?
a dumpling filled with
baby moths?
a bed full of Swiss cheese?
an elephant eating
a slice of pumpkin?
a couch full of
kids’ feet?
a bed full of
kids’ faces?
a burger full of fries
and ketchup?
a wall made of robots?
a mouse eating
a pizza?
a malfunctioning
butterfly that
flew into a wall?

I had the craziest days this week
I saw a tree growing its own money with a password!
The next day I opened my desk and it yelled!
That afternoon the couch was a T.V!
At dinner the food started to talk!
Then there was an earthquake and it laughed!
Late that night the bed was crying!
A squirrel jumped in and it talked!
I accidentally lit the house on fire but it was smoke!

Josiah M.
