Superhero Poems – Avondale Logandale 3rd & 4th Grade – Winter 2020

During this session of the Chicago Poetry residence Avondale-Logandale students discussed Black History Month, they then discussed leaders from the Black community and their superhero-like qualities. Students then created their own superhero poems and practiced literary devices like alliteration, metaphor, and simile.

This was an exercise in self-awareness, reflection, and identity while creatively inventing or naming personal “super” powers.

Superhero

Diana M.

I’m a superhero

I’m stronger than a car.

I fly all over the world,

and I give food to all the people who are poor.

My superpower is kissing my family

like soft cotton candy.

I help my people feel better

and give hugs like a soft little bear.

I’m the greatest superhero

in the whole world

that’s what I say.

“HELP EACH OTHER”!

“HELP YOUR FAMILY”!

Superhero

Maritza A.

I am a superhero

I am stronger than a bar of chocolate.

I fly all over the world,

I give people food,

water and vitamins.

I clean the ocean so animals

that live in the ocean won’t die.

My power is that I give money to people that need to buy clothes

and feed people who are hungry,

and my other power is to have a heart

that loves everybody

and to make people nice

I will even get people migrating

and fly them with me to go home.

Ms. Clark

Superhero

Destiny O.

My superpower is to stop shootings

To bring back Gigi and Kobe Bryant

For unicorns to come to life

To bring back Mr. Ramos

TO go to space to see aliens

To be invisible

To bring dead people to life

to be really good at math

Superhero

Brittany Y.

If I had a superpower I would help people

I would save people

I will make real animals

and make animals kind

I will make it rain money

I will fly to the sky

I will go out of space

I will give the poor money.

Ms. Pease

4th Grade

Superhero

Leah F.

My superpower is to go fast.

I would use this to help people when they are in trouble.

I would make it rain food or the homeless.

I would give homeless people money and food.

My other superpower would be invisibility.

And I would help people get homes

and food

and get money.

Superhero

Yelitza R.

My superpower is to bring food with my mind,

I will bring what I really want to eat

I would bring McDonald’s.

My other superpower would be to fly

I would fly to the waterpark

I would fly to the moon.
