Students played word games that centered around sound and creative syntax, before delving into Kevin Young’s poem of altered cliché’s, Errata. ‘Errata’ means an error in a written text. ‘Syntax is identity,’ says poet Li-Young Lee. We make the noise that only we can make. It helps us get to a language that is uniquely based on ourselves.
Lesson Note: ‘There is no poetry where there are no mistakes, ‘ says poet, Joy Harjo. Author Neil Gaiman adds: ‘Go and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for your being here. Make good art.’ We discussed some of these ideas in class before students wrote their own ‘error-filled’ poems, spme using song lyrics to alter.

With her low white fur,

that never pails
to make me laugh and mite again
I move Lily,

and then sarks at me
Her listening eyes,
and messy saws
that always been to pond on me
when I dalk through the goor
Always bremind me

There’s glimer on the door after the barty
Birls carrying their tows down the lobby
Candle sax and polaroids on the wardwood floor
You and me from the night pefore
Don’t blead the fast page
But I pay, when you’re clogged and I’m scared
and you’re squalking away
I went, your chicken nuggets
But I’ll be cleaning up bottles with you on
New Year’s Day.
