Shhh!

Library Lovers Day coincides with another, more famous holiday, so this week we read “In the Library” by Charles Simic. The poem starts, “There’s a book called / ‘A Dictionary of Angels,’” and one of the first things we tackled was what a dictionary is for—meanings of words, references, origins, and usage—thinking about the many possible ways of interpreting the word angel. We also wondered about lines, in the second stanza, “The angels were once as plentiful / As species of flies”; how can angels and flies be compared? Is it just because they have wings and fly? As far as the setting, we looked at how the poet describes the library as well as its mysterious librarian, who’s “very tall” and “keeps / Her head tipped as if listening.” What does she hear?

In the poem’s third stanza, Simic writes, “The great secret lies / On some shelf Miss Jones / Passes every day on her rounds.” Secrets then became the inspiration for this latest assortment of poems. Check ’em out!

I Got Told a Secret
Ireland C.

I kept for a long time
in that time it floated down
a river. The secret bumped a lily pad and he
sunk down down. No one to hear him. After
years and years with no one to tell his secret
to he swam up to the top of the water.
He started to float up to the midnight
sky. He found a star and was lost for
a long time.

The secret keeps special that certain
people shouldn’t know for a reason that’s
why it’s a secret. It’s what you

The Secret

A secret is a lock. You may not see it.
It is folded until you unfold it. You keep it locked until
you unlock it for somebody. A secret is something you must hide.
You must hide it till you reveal it but by all means
DO NOT SHARE IT

The water is very full.
Water = Secrets. I went over
to the soft, glittering
cover of the old diary
my great grandma gave
me and I started to write…

“Shhhhh…don’t tell anyone
diary, you’re my only hope
so spill the
water, it’s getting heavy.”

I could not trust that
old diary because
when I said I thought
my parents are getting
divorced and I hope
for none of that it
goes right on ahead and
makes that happen.

That old diary was getting
its brain a little sturdier
because when I was 14
they got back together
surprisingly.

I don’t know what to say about
secrets I have nothing to say
yet but the only word I know
is secret I can’t say a secret
because that wouldn’t be keeping
a secret and breaking their
promise so secrets were meant to
be kept not shared with others.

loved secrets.

Their name was
Bob. He loved
to keep things
to himself.

He was selfish
until one day
a lion came

It said, “If
you don’t
tell em all
of your
secrets you will
be eaten.”

So Bob told
all of his
secrets and
learned his
lesson.
