Last week we took a look at Richard Blanco’s poem about missed destinations in, We Are Not Going To Malta. Students were then given travel brochures exhibiting lush locales (decidedly not always the reality in other parts of the world), and asked to create their own poems about wanting to go somewhere, but being unable to. Some students included actual lines from the brochures to juxtapose their imagined locations. See if you can pick them out!

I wish I could go to FIJI
but I can’t
it’s all peaceful, waves moving back
and forth
palm trees dancing
Delicious exquisite food decorated
with flowers
walking by the ocean side

We are not going to Mexico
Why it is so nice
Dust off your night shoes and enjoy the night
we are not going to go
why the water is fresh and cold
we can get tan from the sun

Oh, Costa Rica
if only I could
I would

I wish I could go to Chile
Who wouldn’t?
However I’m not going there anytime soon
Yet if I were I’ll like to eat Chiles
What if they’re different?
Not spicy? Let’s go!

I wish I could go on a ‘5 Star vacation.’
A break from all the stress
Spending time to ‘sparkle in the sun.’
‘Time away from schedules.’
Relaxing and being carefree.
The pool that goes right to the bar.
Not a worry in the world.
