Roses that like to play tag: odes & personification

Oh, odes. An homage to the things we hold close. Last week, Waters 6th graders were inspired by Francisco X. Alarcon’s Ode to my Shoes/ Oda a mis zapatos, an ode that delightfully indulges in personification. Personification describes non-human things are described as having human attributes. Take a look at students’ personification odes and enjoy!

Ode to my Glasses
by Lily J.

To the things i’m supposed to wear 24/7,
As a 4th grader I always thought they were
Weird, or
Goofy.
They were always a pain.
But now I don’t have to ask every 30 seconds
What the board says

Ode to my Coat
by Myles K.

my coat
it protects me
any time
any where

in the winter
when it gets cold
my coat is there
to protect me

without it
it would be
horrible,
so thank you, my coat.

Ode to the beach
by Abby K.

Everything’s better at the beach
Volleyball, fun; but at the beach it’s better
Picnic, fun; but at the beach it’s always better

Hot sand in between your toes
Trying to bury my brother in his deathbed
But he breaks out, and chases after me

I run away into the water
Getting swallowed by the waves
It’s better at the beach

Ode to Swimming
by Ollie B.

I wake up, I get dressed, I go to school
coming home I realize
I have swimming
swimming is chaotic and crowded
I’m always dead last
I don’t think I’ll ever be first

Ode to my Varias de Malvavisco
by Anonymous

When the lights go down,
they start to play soft and round,
they chase the night away, the Varias
de Malvavisco stretch, and giggle low,
they whisper secrets only plush can know

Ode to My Plushie
by Melanie M.J.

My plushie
that yaps to me
all night and day

waits for me
to get back from school
patiently it waits, humming to a song while time passes by

My plushie
that gives me a hug when I need it
My plushie that dreams to come with me, one day

My plushie
that likes to yap to me.
My plushie, my comfort zone.

Ode to Hungry Chairs
by Matthew G.

Chairs are tired of
being sat on all day
Chairs need to eat too
They eat everything, even sun ras

Chairs eat everything
Like dust on the floor
They may even try things
They’ve never tried before

Chairs may eat you
To its next victim, it crawls
It looks for its next meal
Holding you between its jaws

Ode to Roses
by Hilary V.M.

Las Rosas that like the flow with the air
they move
wiggle
and talk

Roses that like to play tag
Ellos corren
sprint
and stop

Roses that like to give happiness
cheerful
and then they STOP AGAIN!

Roses that like to be truthful
but then
they stop

OTRA Y OTRA VES!
