“Pero no se alarmen / que ese polvo de estrellas / cáe en las personas / buenas de este / Tierra” (“Don’t be alarmed / that star dust / falls on the good people / of this Earth”)

How do you fix things? How do you know what needs fixing? This week Waters 6th and 7th graders discussed the poem “What is handed down” by Ada Límon and what it means to be a fixer. Students asked questions about what the difference is to something (or someone) working versus no working and wrote about this in countless different directions. Please enjoy a selection oof their work!

Garden Dilemma

August H.

I am not good at fixing things – I take them to the store

anything I can fix is a pretty easy process, like the time

our neighbor’s dog ran through our garden, destroying the

chickenwire fence and trampling plants. I had plans for

those plants so I tried to save them, pruning and

supporting the weaker ones with twine. The fence was

simple, just zip ties, chicken wire, and posts. I could

have saved myself the work though. There was a tornado

warning a week later where the wind snapped the

plants and then pulled the fence, which was not well

built out of the ground and into a tree. The garden

that year was a bust

My Mechanic Mom

Yaseen

my mom knows how to fix anything

when I’m sad she helps me be happy

when my game is broken she helps fix it

when I’m stuck on my homework

she helps me.

whenever she helps me I feel happy.

whenever she helps me my math teacher

doesn’t get mad at me

Broke America or Fixed America

Nathaniel P.

Today was a day, a very special day in 1929

It was Wall Street – excited brokers screaming

then something was wrong it was down

then the world ended, people tried, they tried

shattered the lives of millions, one person to blame

Herbert Hoover, his reputation shattered.

people were worried millions of lives and jobs

all shattered by one colossal mistake

Then a savior came, the land glowed

for he was a great leader people finally

had relief, Depression was curbing, men

and women found jobs Crops grew in the great west

the means of production increased and

welfare decreased in severity, people

were happy again, how he did it

he did it, rigorous progressive

work, defying his party’s traditions

tranquility hit. The depression was beaten

Who did this great act? Who was this

brave soul?

I can fix

Silas S.

I can fix a couple things.

When my dog gets out,

I can chase after her and get her.

No need to pout.

When we don’t know what to do for dinner,

I can cook something up.

See I can fix some things

Like dinner and my pup.

There’s more things I can do

But we’ll be here all day

If I say them all

So let’s celebrate, YAY!
