Two weeks ago, before illness took this poet away from the 4th floor of Hyde Park High School, we all sat around a table in Ms. Gholston’s art room and discussed magic. How would we use it, what situations would we remedy? Inspired by Eve L. Ewing, these poets took situations of dissatisfaction and distress and turned them into moments of innovation and triumph.

“I’ll bite your soul”
by Tai’Shaun Allen
I had just gotten off work, went to the bus stop, and got on the bus that was pulling up. While waiting, I was listening to music with my eyes closed, and then we pulled up to my stop after a while. I get off the bus and cross the street to the store, but I couldn’t hear anything. All of a sudden, a car goes by almost hitting me, I always kept my headphones off outside now.
My clone just got off work, he jumps back into my body as all his knowledge and memory is shared with me. I then cut through space and time going into a radio tower playing my favorite song as I watch the cars go by.
“Manifestation”
by Kendall W.
One time I was forced to wake up early in the morning at 5:00 AM to get ready to leave to go to a march that I was forced to go to. I was very tired after, and while walking for 4 miles.
I wish when I woke up I could get dressed and manifest a teleportation machine. When I’d get there i would make a fruit which would give me more than enough stamina to walk more than 4 miles.
“Mad and Furious”
by Oluwafeyiseke A.
Outside playing soccer with my brother and our friends, I can recall I was around the age of 9 or 8 and my younger brother was 2 years younger. We were outside playing soccer and one of our friends kicked the ball over a wall and on the other side was a compound (a gated house). We went around the wall to fetch the ball just for us to see a gate a huge gate and it had a dog sign on it, as we started to lose hope. As a kid, dogs were scary to us, so some of us gave up and went home. The rest of us who were left knocked on the big metal door, took a while, and someone finally answered, and it was an angry old man who answered and refused to give the ball back, he left us all mad.
I wanted to use my power to blow down the huge metal gates and put the old man on his roof and leave him there.
