‘Something on my mind…” Simile Poems

Students read Mike Taylor’s poem, ‘Thinking About You,’ and experimented with rhyming, exploring their daydreams and creating similes.

Lesson Note: “I learned that the only way to get a thing done is to start to do it, then keep on doing it, and finally you’ll finish it, even if in the beginning you think you can’t do it at all.”– Langston Hughes

Today during school,

I was so bored

And I couldn’t stop thinking about

My phone, I couldn’t wait to get home

And play games on my phone

My phone is shiny like the lights

I can’t stop thinking about playing

My video games

My phone is as cool as a pair of

Stylish sunglasses.

I can’t get video games out of my head

My phone is as hot as the sun

Whenever I play on it

For way too long.

Rotisserie chicken

By Zhe Han G.

Rotisserie chicken

whom I’m thinking of

in the day at school or home

I had wondered

would you be

a stainless steel non-stick fry pan

flat like a twelve-millimeter tempered glass

Well, I’m in class right now…

and I’m kind of thinking about you…

like sigmas think about mewing,

and rizzlers think about rizzmaxxing,

and skibidis think about cameramen

I’m thinking about you

Something on My Mind, Something Sweet

By Jacky T.

Something on my mind?

Something sweet like candy

Maybe a Twix or a Snicker

Craving something good to eat

What’s on my mind?

Something sweet on a stick,

Like a lollipop or cotton candy

I savor the taste of this candy

Thinking About Food!!!

By Yongyi J.

I’m thinking about food like ice cream

Thinks about melting, and cones think about holding.

I’m thinking about food like McDonald’s fries

Think about salt and burgers think about grilling.

I’m thinking about food like boba tea

Thinks about sugar and straws; think about sipping.

I’m thinking about food like fried chicken

Think about crunch and wings. Think about flavor.

Every bite, a delightful dream,

Food on my mind, like a tasty theme.
