Students read ‘Thanks’ by W.S. Merwin before crafting their poems and musings on thanks!
Lesson Note: “Being grateful is linked to higher levels of life satisfaction, optimism, vitality, helpfulness, empathy, forgiveness, and positive affect. Gratefulness broadens our perspective on life, allowing us to be more creative and insightful. Gratitude also reduces feelings of envy, negativity, depression, and anxiety” Psychology Today. Thanks
By Ronan H.C.
From the life I was given, I am thankful.
For the life I was born into I am thankful.
I am thankful for the morning birds and trees
I’m as thankful as plants are to water.
Thanks is like a ball of happiness.
You wake up with and go to sleep with
It can carry you through the day and lift
you up in the morning.
It’s like a ray of happiness you get from
your activities.
From Starbucks to Fortnite, you must be thankful.

First of all, I am thankful for Beyonce
I am thankful for my friends for lighting up
my life.
I am thankful for my bed for being
a happy, comfortable space.
I am thankful for Culvers
because it is delicious.

Be thankful
Thankful that you can wake up today
Thankful for the ability to feel and think
Thankful that every day is a new opportunity
Be thankful
Thankful for those who support you
Thankful for the people that hold the door for you
Thankful that you’re able to make a difference
Be thankful
Thankful that you’re you
Thankful for yourself
Thankful for me
Thankful for those who can’t be.

Thank you, not just thanks
Thanks is what you say
When someone says, “Bless you!”
Thanks is what you say
When someone hands you a dropped pencil
Thanks isn’t what you say
to someone who changed your life
Someone who gave you purpose
Someone who gave you a shoulder to cry on
Someone who read you stories when you were a kid
Someone who studied with you for your math test
even if it was 11 pm
thanks is too plain
a filler, if you will
thanks leaves the YOU out of it
the you that gave me a roof over my head
the you that was a built-in best friend
the you who asked me about my day
and smiled even if I said, “fine.”
and slammed my door
and left
thank you is what you say
to someone you appreciate
someone who will love you
even if you are just a moody teen
someone who saved your life
even if you didn’t realize
it yet
so thank you, not just thanks
because it was you
who was my savior
and YOU
who keeps me living
It’s you who I love
more than anything
else
so what I’d like to
say
out of all of this
is
thank you, not just thanks.

A thank you is a warm hug
A thank you is a stop sign
A thank you is a fire
A thank you is the smell of your favorite food cooking
A thank you is like family
A thank you is everything

Thanks is the comfort of snow falling outside the warm house
where you are sheltered
Thanks is the warm fireplace, you warm your hands up against
after sledding
Thanks is the smell of freshly baked cooked wafting into the
the living room as you get home from school
Thanks is the cool cloth your mom puts on your forehead
when you are sick
Thanks is the teacher telling you “Stay warm,” when you leave
Thank is your dog cuddling up to you to get warm
Thanks is warmth
Thank you
