“EL Mundo Para Niños”

Back from the break for Thanksgiving, Twain 3rd graders sat with me and thought of whimsical and serious ideas for the kind of world they would like to live in. We read and discussed my poem, “Life is for us and It Shines” – a poem I wrote about the kind of world I feel all children deserve to live in. I shared that my poem was inspired by Gwendolyn Brooks’ “A Little Girl’s Poem.” When students turned to writing their own poems, I challenged them to write two or more stanzas, employ repetition, or rhyme, or create their own patterns.

The Best World
by Antonio A.

In my world I want to have respect to others
In my world I want to have money all moments
In my world I want rules that nobody is bad or
not kind
In my world I want rules that everybody
likes the limon ice cream
In my world I like to be in a safe world.

Un Mundo le Gal
Mario L.

Si yo puedo aser un mundo
Lo que yo haria es animales
Con ciudades donde viviria mu abuela
Y mi mama y mi hermana la ciudad
Estaria de edificios y departamentos
Donde vivira las personas y familias

Y tener paz y sin violencia
Y celebra ayudarse y ser buenos
Y sin burlarse y dejarse en paz
Y tener la suficiente comida

I want children to be kind
for those people that cry

I wish that everything can be free
for people that have no money

I want people’s stories to exist
so they can be happy

I wish there were desk beds
for those who are tired

I wish that people that died can come back
so moms aren’t stressed

I want guns and swords not to exist
for those who get shot

I want people’s stories to exist
so they can be happy.

My World of Donuts
by Leila P.

I want to grow up in a great world
of wonder and eat dunkin donuts
with coffee every day of my life and
in my world the floor would be ice cream
so in my world you have to wear
all pink and no school
so you better come all cool.

I want to grow up in a world
of wonder where there’s no thunder
and lots of sun in my world
of wonder and donuts.

Eva

We should be free from bullying
We should be free from being
frozen to death
We should be friends
with another.

We have to learn
We have to be friends with animals.

Ares C.

I wish
we have the right for no school
bullying and sadness doesn’t happen
Grown up people have no work
work is no longer a thing
free money.

I wish
my world is filled with pride and
happiness, joy

My world is filled with life.

A Magical World where dreams come true
Whatever you draw or paint it
comes to life
Every child has a school to learn
Nobody is mean
Everybody has food to eat
Everybody has a life
Everybody has a house to live
Nobody dies

Penelope

In my world
we have no
wars, no guns,
and no violence.

In my world
we have no
rude people
its just nice
people.

In my world
we have people
who treat us
fairly.

In my world
people who
don’t have
food can
have food.

Vincent

I want to live in a world
that’s in peace

I want to live in a world
where all countries sign a peace treaty

I want for people in the world
to have fun but not guns

Now, in the world people are fighting with
guns and fighters but they are not focused on
people who need homes and need
money
it’s not a want it’s a need

and people who say to someone that
they can’t do something keep dreaming and
maybe some day you’ll get it

don’t let people say you’re
ugly
you’re beautiful
the way you are.

If I was in charge I would make
school be 8 hours long so kids can
learn more.

I would only want to eat apples
until I go to the 8th grade.

I want all the homeless people
to have homes and food to be happy.

Hot Cocoa Poem
by Gloria F.

We want a hot cocoa world
We need healthy food
We need hot cocoa socks
We want hot cocoa clothes
We need hot cocoa everything

We need some quiet in the mornings
We want it to be alone
We want cookies and cream
We want happiness, joy, and freedom
We want fluffy clouds

The great life!!!

If I was in charge of the world this is what would happen:
There would be no wars or guns
If you were poisoned you would have a doctor in your house
Stores would be closed on weekends and holidays
Adults would have to go to school but kids wouldn’t

All stores would sell triple chocolate donuts
You could go outside whenever you want
Adults would not have to go to work

My World
by Isabella G.

I wish poor people can have houses
I wish my birthday is every day
I wish that it is always summer
I wish that I can have an iPhone
I wish that all of the children can
be thankful for what they get.

One rule I will make is that
everyone can jump on couches.
Next rule is poor children can
have food.

Happy Thoughts
by Camila P.

I like trains
but not rain

No boots
But fruits
No guns
But bubble gum

I like trains
But not rain

No buses
But muffins
No canes
But candy canes
No sad faces
But happy faces
and jolly faces

I like trains
but not rain
