Week 4 of our 3rd grade residency was during the final week of October, and many students were looking forward to overflows of Halloween treats! We warmed up by verbally creating similes that were Halloween themed: comparing things that were scary, orange like pumpkins, and pointy as a witch’s hat. One of the risky and fun things about writing poetry for the first time is playing with words to talk about every day things in fresh and unexpected ways. Before reading and discussing two poems about dreams, students worked from a worksheet I had created for practicing similes. I challenged them to try and come up with ideas that no one else would think of – and they really put forth great effort!
