This week at the O-School, students explored different types of technology. We watched a video of kids, who reacted to older technology such as a typewriter, rotary phone, and record player. It’s amazing how technology has changed so much, now we have high tech devices smartphones, laptops, and e-readers. Humans rely so much on technology that it’s hard to imagine how we would function without it.
Together we reader the poem, “My Phone,” by Melanie C. a 6th grader from Twain Elementary. In her poem, Melanie uses personification, giving her phone human characteristics. My phone yells at me to wake up in the morning/ which is annoying. I can never get enough good sleep /because my phone talks at me, telling me to go use it. Melanie like many of us, are attached to our phones, they wake up us with an alarm, help us look up information, entertain us with games, and help us talk to others. But sometimes turning off or unplugging our technology, can give us the rest we need.
Below are drawings, photos, and brainstorms from students based on ideas about technology. I brought my tiny wireless blue mic and speaker, and students had fun reading their work out loud and hearing their voices echo on the mic.
The Terrapins
My Echo-Dot
Everyday my Echo Dot annoys me
by breaking down.
It always talks about my favorite books,
insulting all my choices.
In the afternoon it wants to play some
weird random music.
When we are together we always argue,
because it never soothes.
At night time it wants to beep and fall
off my bed. Losing the cable attached to it.
My Echo-Dot makes me super annoyed,
It acts like an eel.
My Headphones
Everyday my headphones like to play music
on audio and Tik Tok.
It always talks about music.
In the afternoon it likes to play jazz music.
When we are together, we listen to music.
At night time it wants to charge.
My headphones make me feel chill and happy
when I’m driving.
The Dreamers
My Sega Genesis
Everyday my Sega Genesis likes to play and look at Mario.
It always talks about Sonic and Nintendo.
In the afternoon it wants to sleep.
When we are together we play games.
At nighttime it wants to turn off and sleep.
My Sega Genesis makes me feel happy when
I’m playing it.
