Just One Of Those Days

What’s your favorite day of the week? What’s your least favorite? These are the questions I asked this past Tuesday for my second week with Terrapins and Dreamers students at the O-School. Friday and Saturday were the most popular days, since it’s the start of the weekend of relaxing and fun, while Sunday and Monday were given a bad rap by students, because they represent the start of another long week of school.

Together we read Francisco X. Alarcon’s poem, “On Monday I Feel Like a Dragon.” Alarcon used similes and metaphors to compare himself to various creatures to express how he feels on Mondays. Early on Monday my hair stands out like a sea urchin/ On Monday afternoon I’m a wild porcupine in a real bad humor. Alarcon shows how to our feelings can change throughout the day depending on the situation.

Below are students brainstorms and drawings of how they saw themselves on certain days of the week. One student even drew a picture of me that Tuesday. I’m smiling and seem to be in a happy mood. These are works in progress. Once students type up their poems I will share in this post. Special thanks goes to poetry resident Chastity Gunn whose lesson helped inspire this week’s writing prompt.

The Terrapins

Sunday

Early on Sunday, I feel like a college student,
looking for work to do.
In the afternoon I’m a reader, when
reading is never so fun.
By evening I feel like a cat when
I want to go to bed.
At the end of Sunday, I sleep when
I relaxed.

Sunday

Early on Sunday morning I feel like a picture frame,
when I hang on the wall with the one ability to
printed photos up.
In the afternoon, I’m a long thin rope when
I sit on the living sofa watching TV.
By evening I feel like an endless tunnel
when there is creativity in my mind
during mealtimes. At the end of Sunday
I’m a big two-toned spiral circle when I’m
about to go to bed at the late hours.

I Hate Mondays

Early on Mondays I feel like Squidward.
When I wake up to my aunt screaming
at me in the afternoon.
When it’s the middle of the day.
By the evening, I feel like a fire.
When its nighttime, at the end of Monday
I’m a ??? when I’m sad.
