Letter Poems- 7th Grade

This week we explored the epistolary poem, or a poem in the form of a letter. We watched the video for Kobe Bryant’s Dear Basketball piece, that he wrote to commemorate his retirement from the game. Students were struck by how poignant the piece was, and got to work on some of their own pieces. These were such a treat to read. I hope you enjoy this weeks poems!

Dear Peso Pluma

Juan S.

Dear Peso Pluma,

From the moment

I saw you perform on stage through

the TV and watching you sing

I knew one thing was real.

I fell in in love with you.

A love so deep I gave you

my voice and body.

to my spirit and soul.

As a six-year-old boy

deeply in love with you (not like a crush)

I never saw the end of the concert.

I only saw myself

running out of one.

And so I ran.

I ran up and down every stage

After every ticket for you.

You asked for my hustle,

I gave you my heart.

Because it became so much more

I played through the sweat and power

because challenges called me

but because you called me.

When someone makes you feel as

alive as you make me feel.

You gave a 13 year old boy his singer

dream.

I’ll always love you for it.

But I can’t love you obsessively for

much longer.

This season is all I have to give.

My heart can take the pounding

My mind can handle the grind.

Dear Breakdance

Adrian M.

Dear Breakdance,

You have always put me to the test,

it’s like you know I want to be the best,

and for six years I have always been

rookie.

When practicing you have always put me

in struggle

but whenever I go down

I get up with no frown,

you have taught me how to be patient

you made me strong

and you helped me with many more.

This year I’m trying to go up more levels,

I’m going to pass all the hurdles,

and this yeat I have met new faces,

and been to more places,

you have given me more opportunities

and obstacles,

but I took it,

and you gave me sweat

and it’s OK cause with everything I said yes.

You have changed me,

I’m a new person,

you gave me alot,

and I love it,

you really did alot,

and yes, you have done it,

thank you breakdance for making a new

me.

Mami

Karina

Mami te amo

mucho aprecio

tu trabajo todos

los dias, eres tan

genial y generosa.

Estoy muy feliz

de tener una madre

como tu. Te amo

desde la luna y de

regreso. Puede que

no siempre mencione

el amore que siento

por ti. Me encanta

como aguantas mi

actitud. Gracias por

amarme. Y gracias

por darme el mundo.
